Khune gets 70 minutes

Cape Town - Goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune made his long-awaited return to action with when he started against Iran in a friendly.

According to Soccer Laduma, Khune played 70 minutes as Kaizer Chiefs welcomed former national team coach, Carlos Queiroz and his Iran side, to the Naturena for a friendly.

Khune's return was marred by his side going down 2-1 to Iran, with "Spiderkid" conceding both goals in the friendly encounter.

After 70 minutes Khune was withdrawn as Amakhosi back-up shot-stopper, Reyaad Pieterse, was brought on to finish the remaining 20 minutes.

Khune's return to the field was not enough to convince Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba to take a gamble on his fitness.

Mashaba announced his 34 man provisional squad for AFCON 2015 and left Khune out in the cold. (Read that story HERE!)

The 64-year-old coach kept his faith in Darren Keet (KV Kortrijk), Siyabonga Mpontshane (Platinum Stars) and Jackson Mabokgwane (Mpumalanga Black Aces), while Khune's understudy at Kaizer Chiefs, Brilliant Khuzwayo, also made the cut.

Mashaba will announce his final squad on Tuesday, December 30.
