No AFCON spot for Khune

Cape Town - Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba has named his provisional squad ahead of the December 30 deadline for next year's AFCON tournament.

Mashaba named his provisional 34-man squad for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Thursday and opted to include a host of new candidates for the trip to Equatorial Guinea.

There was no place in the squad for regular squad members Sibusiso Khumalo (SuperSport United), Tefu Mashamaite (Kaizer Chiefs), Kermit Erasmus (Orlando Pirates), Fagrie Lakay (Santos) and Lehlohonolo Majoro (Orlando Pirates).

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was also ignored as the former national team captain nears a return to full fitness following a long-term injury.

Vuyisile Wana (Moroka Swallows), Jabulani Shongwe (BidVest Wits), Bongani Zungu (Mamelodi Sundowns), Thamsanqa Sangweni (Chippa United), Mondli Cele (Maritzburg United), Thuso Phala (SuperSport United) have all been given a chance to make the final squad despite not featuring for the national team during AFCON 2015 qualifying.

With both Orlando Pirates strikers left out by Mashaba, Ayanda Patosi (Lokeren) and Bernard Parker (Kaizer Chiefs) were added to Mashaba's attacking options.

Bafana Bafana will open their AFCON 2015 group stage campaign against Algeria on January 19.
