Keene strike sinks Free State Stars

Cape Town - Free State Stars were unlucky to succumb to a 1-0 defeat to SuperSport United at Goble Park on Saturday evening.

As it happened: Mamelodi Sundowns 0-0 Orlando Pirates

James Keene scored the only goal of a fiercely contested Premiership tie on 52 minutes.

The result saw Matsatsantsa move onto 15 points in seventh place, with Ea Lla Koto in eighth place with 13 points.

Stars started well in possession although it was the away side with the first real chance of the game, as Aubrey Modiba strode forward and let rip with a powerful effort that veered off target.

Stars were looking dangerous on the counter for the most part, but where unable to pick apart a congested SuperSport defence.

Modiba fired a volley wide on 31 minutes as he connected to a Kamohelo Mahlatsi cross, before Keene was denied with a good stop by Stars goalkeeper Badra Ali Sangare.

But Keene was not to be denied from a well-placed header from inside the box as he got on the end of a cross from Evans Rusike.

Mpho Maruping so nearly levelled the score at the death but saw Ronwen Williams make a super stop to secure the win, and see his side return to winning ways.
