According to reports, Serero was booted out of the Bafana camp ahead of their crucial 2014 Soccer World Cup qualifier against Botswana at the Moses Mabhida Stadium last Saturday after claims he was concerned about getting injured and missing Ajax's upcoming Champions League match against Spanish giants Barcelona at the Nou Camp on Wednesday, September 18.

However, according to the Sowetan website, speaking through his mentor Mike Ntombela on Sunday, Serero denied faking the injury, claiming he has played for Bafana Bafana in the past ahead of big Champions League games.

Despite confirmation from Bafana coach Gordon Igesund that he told Serero he wanted him to start, Serero added that 'because he's not the coach (Serero) there was no guarantee he would play, but wouldn't have travelled to Durban from Holland if I did not want to play.'

Igesund told reporters after the 4-1 win over Botswana that he would submit a report to SAFA to take the matter further.

Bafana are scheduled to face Zimbabwe in a friendly on Tuesday at the Orlando Stadium at 20:30. Serero is not part of that squad.

      Mlungisi Nhlapo - 2013-09-09 17:46

he will come and apologise the day there is a big match like a game against England or Spain or if we ever qualify for the 2018 world cup, then he will apologize because he will want the international exposure.....

  • Kgosi Samuel Mogosetso - 2013-09-09 11:04

U will be a fool to listen to Serero because if a team doc says u are ok to play that is what u shld do

  • Ashley Tshego - 2013-09-09 11:04

Thulani is not the person Gordon accuse him off! The boy was in the camp and if he says he's got a muscle strain, why don't GI believe him? He doubts his integrity and go grandstanding to the media- well the same media will rip into you once things go pear shaped! The boy deserved the benefit of your doubt coach! He didn't go clubbing, AWOL or late for training- YOU ACCUSE HIM BASED ON PERCEPTION, NOTHING CONCRETE! SAFA won't do any damage control either!

      Jabulani Ndlamlenze - 2013-09-09 11:07

      Akahambe ayofa uSerero.

      Goodwill Mtshayise - 2013-09-09 11:21

Ashley Gordon was there with a player unlike you and myself. In this case Gordon knows better than you.

  • Zolani Pukison - 2013-09-09 11:22

Come on Serero tell de truth!

  • Zama Ludaka - 2013-09-09 11:36

Give the boy a break guys, we dont know the whole story

      Bob Double-Oseven - 2013-09-09 12:32

When there is smoke you don't need to know the whole story to know there is fire...

      Steven Chiaberta - 2013-09-10 11:40

Why would GI lie about one of his best players so that he could drop him? Surely he needs the best players in the team if he wants to keep his job? But then Serrero makes a good point. Why would he come all the way from Holland if he didn't want to play? What the hell's going on here???

  • Khotso Sarele - 2013-09-09 11:52

no detailed serero' side here.unbalanced story,so i cnt believe anyone based on ths.

  • Aunty Kettle - 2013-09-09 11:56

Yes he honored the call up, but by honoring the call up, it doesn't mean he wanted to play. The Ajax coach told GI that Serero need some game time, Serero came so that he could stay in the good books of the Ajax coach, but later changed his mind about playing, so as not to risk getting injured for the champions match. You don't see the the great players of the world CR7, Messi, Neymar and others snubbing their Countries. And these guys are way more expensive than Sereo will ever be. (CR7 and Messi are currently estimated at 250mil Euros, Neymar 190mil) Serero hasn't even made a proper name for himself yet, he is no were close to being called one of SA legends yet. We need players who are hungry to play for Bafana and were our jersey with pride. They want to play so bad, no injury will stop them. Once we have players like that we will win as a nation.

  • Thabiso Makhubedu - 2013-09-09 12:02

honestly i believe thulani serero for one reason he wudhv nt flew from holland to durban jst to fake an injury for a place at ajax to play barcelona on 18sep nevertheless i suggest both igusend nd serero must be interviewed on national television for clarification

      Ernest Baiden - 2013-09-09 12:25

Are you Seriously saying the coach made up the story and got the backing of all his staff, including the mentioning the assistant coaches names? come on man. Did you read the boy's side of the story? No details just plain denial....Igesund must be awarded an Oscar if he is actually fabricating a lie against Serero...and the question is why?? What will be his motive.

      Bob Double-Oseven - 2013-09-09 12:35

You do miss the truth and reconciliation commission don't you @Thabiso???

      Sipho Mnguni - 2013-09-09 14:14

@Thabiso:) In your logic both the Dr and the assistant coach are lying when they backed the coach's story.

  • Thabo Malose - 2013-09-09 12:35

Safa is to blame, why couldnt they put proper structures in place to develop talented footballers in dis country. Now we are forced to beg half decent players like Serero who inturn shows us a middlefinger. If we had top players dis idiot wouldnt be making the headlines.

  • Tabile Lebo Gcoko - 2013-09-09 12:39

  • Phehello Selepe - 2013-09-10 11:37

Nothing new, Benny did it, Quitine did it too. its stardom, or rather South African Stardom, this I s the very reason why the soccer is SA is what it is now, the gents are not passionate the represent their country, they have begged to do their national duties. there is absolutely nothing wrong with the SA style of soccer, the problem is the people that are chosen to show it off to the world, do not care. Bring back the Doctors, Shoes, Zane Mose', Mid nyt express, Fish, Mark Williams they might be old but I guarantee that the passion they have alone will put us back on the map
