Cape Town - South Africa have still managed just one win against Nigeria, this after playing to a 1-1 draw with the Super Eagles in an international friendly at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Sunday.

Bafana Bafana were hopeful of picking up a second victory against the West Africans ahead of the match in the Mpumalanga province, having twice held Nigeria to draws at the back end of last year in the qualifiers for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

However, another stalemate was the best Shakes Mashaba’s side could manage, with Bongani Zungu scoring deep in injury time to cancel out Ahmed Musa’s superb strike that looked set to give the Super Eagles an eighth win over South Africa. In all, the teams have now met in 12 official international matches since their first clash in a 1994 World Cup qualifier in Lagos way back in October 1992 – South Africa were very much inexperienced at international football at that stage (having only returned from isolation a few months earlier) and suffered a 4-0 loss which has since set the tone for the rivalry.

Bafana Bafana’s only victory against Nigeria arrived in November 2004 when they claimed a 2-1 win in a friendly match at Ellis Park in Johannesburg. The Super Eagles, in stark contrast, boast seven victories.
