Stormers utility back finds a new home in Japan

Cape Town - Stormers utility back SP Marais' move to the Canon Eagles in Japan has been confirmed.

A report last month had linked Marais with a move to the Canon Eagles, who are coached by former Springbok boss Allister Coetzee.

The Canon Eagles confirmed Marais' signing for the 2019/20 season on their official website on Wednesday.

"Marais is a utility outside back and an excellent left-handed kicker. He is also very skilful, so he is a player who gives the Eagles new value," Coetzee said.

The 30-year-old Marais, who can also play on the wing, has been on the Stormers' books since 2017. Before that he also played for the Southern Kings, Bulls and Sharks.

Coetzee, who coached the Springboks in the 2016 and 2017 seasons, has been the head coach of the Canon Eagles since 2018.

Meanwhile, the Canon Eagles also confirmed the signing of Springbok centre Jesse Kriel from the Bulls.
