Jantjies to answer Lions' call for a new leader?

Cape Town - Springbok flyhalf Elton Jantjies is the front-runner to take over the Lions captaincy from the injured Warren Whiteley.

The Lions received a massive blow on Monday with the news that Whiteley faces between six and eight weeks on the sidelines with a pectoral injury that he picked up against the Stormers at Newlands over the weekend.

When Whiteley left the field on Saturday, Jantjies took over the captaincy with the help of Kwagga Smith.

With Franco Mostert now plying his trade abroad, Lions coach Swys de Bruin must appoint a new leader for what is a crucial time in the Super Rugby season as sides look to make their moves.

Jantjies is the vice-captain at the franchise and has been a member of the Springbok leadership group for some time now, making him the most obvious choice to take on the role.

The Lions, who have contested the last three Super Rugby finals, have won one and lost one in 2019 so far.

They are next in action when they host the Bulls at Ellis Park on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 15:05.
