Kwagga available for Commonwealth Games

Cape Town - Lions and Blitzboks star Kwagga Smith says he has made himself available to play sevens for South Africa at the Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast later this year.

Smith is currently in Sydney as the Blitzboks prepare for the World Rugby Sevens Series event there this weekend.

Smith and sevens team-mates Seabelo Senatla, Sikhumbuzo Notshe (both Stormers) and Tim Agaba (Bulls) will play for the Blitzboks over the next two weekends in tournaments in Sydney and Hamilton before returning to their franchises for Super Rugby.

However, Smith has indicated he’ll be available for the sevens edition of the Commonwealth Games, which is scheduled for April 13-15.

The Lions have a bye that weekend, but it could see Smith miss important matches against the Crusaders (March 31) and Stormers (April 7) at Ellis Park.

“I said to coach Neil (Powell, Springbok Sevens coach) that I will be available for the Commonwealth Games. If I get chosen then hopefully I'm back here sooner rather than later. It actually works out quite nice because the Commonwealth Games is on an off weekend at the Lions in Super Rugby and then they come to Sydney for their (Australasian) tour that starts,” Smith was quoted as saying on Netwerk24.
