Cape Town - Wayde van Niekerk is preparing to run competitively for the first time since his Rio Olympic Games heroics in August 2016.
According to OFM website, Van Niekerk will compete at a local Schools Zone 1 meet at the Mangaung Athletics Track in Bloemfontein over the weekend.
The Olympic gold medalist is expected to run in the men's 200m and possibly in his trademark 400m event.
Van Niekerk, 24, smashed American Michael Johnson's 17-year-old 400m record when he stormed to Olympic gold in August last year at the Rio Games.
Van Niekerk stopped the clock in a time of 43.03, which was 0.15 quicker than Johnson's previous world best set in Seville in 1999.
Van Niekerk, who was nominated for the prestigious Laureus Breakthrough of the Year award, is excited to kick-off his 2017 season and hopefully continue his winning momentum.
"I'm just really going to use this weekend as a good training session so that we can just help the fitness and the sharpness," he said.
"It's just really to get the legs lose and see where I'm at now... I will slowly but surely move towards improving my actual speed for the season."
