Wolvaardt looking to play her best cricket

Cape Town - Proteas womens opener Laura Wolvaardt says she's eager to get back into the middle and continue her form with bat leading up to the limited-overs series against Bangladesh.

The Proteas will play five One-Day Internationals (ODI) and three Twenty20s against Bangladesh, starting with the first ODI on May 4 at Potchefstroom.

Sport24 caught up with Wolvaardt at the opening day of the third Test between South Africa and Australia at Newlands.

"We've had a few weeks of training at gym, worked on technique a little bit and we've had some good sessions to work for the Bangladesh tour. We also have a national cricket week coming up where all the players will play against each other, just to keep the form in and get some games," she said.

"Hopefully we can all spend some time in the middle to get some runs in preparation for the Bangladesh series."

Despite coming off a 3-1 T20 series loss to India at home, Wolvaardt doesn't want to take a side like Bangladesh for granted.

"Obviously, we can't take any team for granted even though India are ranked higher than Bangladesh. We'll be looking to play our best cricket," said Wolvaardt.

"I don't think we'll be affected by our opponents, we'll be more focused on our game and that we execute properly. We're hoping this series can prepare us for the big series coming up against England."

Wolvaardt was one of the 14 squad members awarded national contracts and she could not be happier.

"It feels great. It's amazing that I get to play cricket full-time. I don't have to worry about things like money right now."

The 18-year-old also admitted that women's cricket is improving year-by-year.

"It's definitely improved in the last few years, ever since the World Cup in July the media attention has been a lot bigger than it was. Getting it televised makes a difference, so it's great and we'll try and make the most of it. There's definitely a rise and hopefully it just keeps going."
