Wolvaardt sole Protea in Women's T20 World Cup team

Proteas batter Laura Wolvaardt was the only South African to make the 2020 Women's T20 World Cup team of the tournament.

The side was pulled together by a selection panel featuring commentators and former international players Ian Bishop, Anjum Chopra and Lisa Sthalekar, journalist Raf Nicholson and ICC representative Holly Colvin.

The Proteas bowed out of the Women's T20 World Cup after their narrow 5-run defeat from eventual champions, Australia last Thursday.

Wolvaardt made her mark to remain unbeaten in the tournament despite only batting in two innings.

Wolvaardt struck 53 not out to see the Proteas edge Pakistan, while in the semi-final against the hosts, the 20-year-old top-scored with an unbeaten 41 off 27 balls.

After the Proteas crashed out of the World Cup, Van Niekerk revealed that Wolvaardt apologised for not getting South Africa over the line.

"The fact that she gave up medicine to play cricket that says a lot," said Van Niekerk last Thursday.

"She apologised for not getting the last runs and I was like: 'You couldn't of done anything more'. The hunger to play for her country is always there, she's been brilliant. She's my pick for the tournament."

Meanwhile, back-to-back champions Australia crushed India by 85 runs in front of more than 86 000 fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday.

The team of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2020 (in batting order) is:
