Sunfoil retires as Proteas' Test sponsor

Pietermaritburg - The Sunfoil brand will no longer be the main sponsor to Cricket South Africa's (CSA) four-day domestic tournament and Proteas' Test cricket.

The Willowton Group announced on Monday that despite pulling its sponsorship from CSA, it will maintain the Sunfoil Education Trust and is currently involved in discussions with CSA on other grassroots development opportunities.

"After years of involvement with Cricket South Africa, we have mutually decided to focus on other areas of opportunity. We will continue to discuss these opportunities with Cricket South Africa in this regard," said Mohamed Zubeir Moosa, CEO for the company.

Sunfoil has backed the national side since the 2011/12 Test match series against Australia and during this period of time, sponsored ODI series' and has also put its weight behind KwaZulu-Natal domestic side, the Dolphins.

The shocking news comes on the day CSA released its fixtures for the 2018/19 domestic season.

It is set to get under way on September 26 when the Titans host the Dolphins at SuperSport Park in a four-day match.

Last week, SuperSport announced that it will not be pursuing a proposed shareholding agreement with CSA for its domestic T20 tournament.

Originally called the T20 Global League, the tournament was scrapped just weeks before it was due to be launched at the end of 2017.

The inaugural tournament is expected to be played during November and December 2018.

It remains to be seen whether or not the tournament ever takes flight.
