SuperSport United CEO Stanley Matthews says he would prefer for his club to finish outside the top three in the PSL this season.

Matsatsantsa entered the enforced break to league action as a result of the coronavirus in third place, with six matches to play.

While the Absa Premiership winner and runner-up both qualify for the African Champions League, the third-placed side enters into the CAF Confederation Cup.

But Matthews, whose side have competed on the African continent numerous times before, (making it all the way to the CAF Confederation Cup final in 2017 where they lost to TP Mazembe) says it is 'a year too early to make a return'.

He told Kickoff: "We've shown that we are capable of competing in Africa, we've competed in Africa twelve times in the past 16 years.

"We have what it takes to compete in Africa, but we have to be honest as a football club. We haven't been in the top four in our league since 2012.

"I'm just asking the question that if you can't finish in your own domestic league in the top four, for eight years, are you ready to go and conquer the continent or should you be focusing on nailing down a top four, top three?."

Matthews added: "I think that it's a year too early for us. We need to show that we can finish in the top four this year and try to grab that fourth spot, which would be a great accomplishment for us."
