Cape Town - Jonathan Woodgate has returned to Middlesbrough to join the coaching overhaul at the struggling Premier League club.

The 37-year-old former England and Boro centre-back joins Joe Jordan and Paul Jenkins on Steve Agnew's technical team, after having given up his position as a scout at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp.

Part of a statement from his hometown club read: "In a distinguished playing career that saw him represent Real Madrid and England, Woodgate enjoyed two spells with boyhood club Boro, announcing his retirement shortly after the Teessiders’ promotion to the Premier League in May 2016.

"He becomes the latest addition to Head Coach Steve Agnew’s coaching staff, following the appointments of Joe Jordan and Paul Jenkins."

New Boro boss Agnew added: "Jonathan is someone who we know very well, and who in turn knows this club inside and out.

“He brings a wealth of experience from the highest level of the game, and he’s a fantastic character. We’re delighted to have him on board.”

Woodgate replaces First Team Fitness Carlos Cachada, who joined the club with Karanka in November 2013, along with goalkeeping Coach Marcos Abad and analysts Juanjo Vila and Guillermo Salinas, who have also all left.
