The new i20 debuted in South Africa this May.  The latest generation of i20 has risen to the challenge of improving upon its predecessor with a touch of style available in a selection of eight different derivatives.

The hatchback market is a staunchly competitive environment with the popular body type being the most common and preferred choice of chassis type in Mzansi. 2 months on from its launch, we take another look at one hatchback that is determined to stake its claim for a spot on the podium, Hyundai’s new i20.

Aesthetics

This next-gen i20 comes with a stylish and unique redesign is a reflection of Hyundai’s new design language “Sensuous Sportiness”. It comes in either a monotone or two-tone paint finishes. Customers can choose from a range of colours for the exterior, including; Polar White, Typhoon Silver, Titan Grey, Starry Night, Phantom Black, and Fiery Red.

The two-tone exterior finish is only available on Fluid models. Fluid models also boast a black interior with red trim leather seats while mono-tone models come in a black fabric seats.

Safety features

The features packed into the latest edition of the i20 bring both subtle conveniences to the experience of driving and enhance safety and security. All the new i20 models come complete with standard safety features such as rear park assist, a rear park camera, driver and passenger airbags, and ISOFIX child seat attachments. The Fluid models possess a 6-airbag system to protect against driver, passenger and side curtain impact. Halogen headlights, daytime running lights and fog lights have also been fitted to ensure visibility of the road ahead regardless of the driving conditions. Standard features across all models also include remote keyless entry and central locking.

Creature comforts and convenience

Drivers of the new i20’s Fluid models can look forward to the multifunction steering wheel with audio and cruise control, wireless charging and electric fold-away side mirrors. In-car infotainment comes standard across all models with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Longevity and maintenance

The new i20 comes standard with Hyundai's 7-year or 200 000km manufacturer's warranty as well as a 4-year or 60 000km service plan.

With stiff competition for a spot on the podium from competitors like VW’s Polo, Renault’s Clio and Toyota’s Starlet, the choice of hatchback for you might rest on taking the car out for a spin on a test drive.
