Cape Town - According to local media Mark Mayambela is in advanced talks with Chippa United, however, after talking with both parties Sport24 can reveal that there has not been any formal contact.
Mayambela played for NFD side Royal Eagles in the second half of last season after returning home from a spell with Swedish side Djurgardens IF.
His contract with Eagles runs out this month but the KZN-based team wants him to sign on for next season.
“With Royal Eagles, the last time I spoke to them they wanted me to sign but we haven’t spoken about anything contractual right now,” Mayambela said.
“My contract expires at the end of June.”
It has been reported that he was in advanced discussions with Chippa but he said that was not true.
“No, I haven’t spoken to Chippa,” he said before saying that he would be open to a move if Chippa were interested.
“Of course, it’s football and anything is possible.”
Chippa Mpengesi, the club’s owner, insisted that there had been no formal contact as of yet.
“To be honest with you that story is wrong, there haven’t been any negotiations, in fact I was upset when I saw that story,” Mpengesi said.
Mpengesi, however, refused to write off the story completely saying that he still has an open mind with regards to bringing in Mayambela.
Both parties were playing their cards close to their chests but neither would completely write off the proposed deal.
