The match was originally scheduled to take place on May 21, but the PSL took exception to the proposal due to the date falling within the regular South African soccer season and possibly detracting from the Nedbank Cup final, due to take place on May 25 between Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United.
A statement released on the club's website reads:
"Liverpool Football Club recently accepted an invitation from the City of Cape Town to play a fixture against Ajax Cape Town on Tuesday, May 21.
"This post-season fixture represented an opportunity for the club to visit supporters in South Africa for the first time in 19 years. Regrettably, the South Africa Premier Soccer League has decided that this match cannot now be played on this date and have subsequently advised Ajax Cape Town that this fixture should be cancelled.
"We are hugely disappointed that we are unable to visit and the team cannot play in front of our terrific supporters.
"Moreover, we are saddened that we cannot at this time undertake the community and grassroots activities we had planned as part of our visit to South Africa."
Earlier this week, the City of Cape Town's Mayoral Committee member for Tourism, Events &
Marketing, Grant Pascoe, confirmed the match was not in any jeopardy and that they received clearance from SAFA, FIFA and the English Premiership and that it is up to Ajax to iron out any clashes it may have with the PSL.
"Despite receiving permission from the English Football Association and the South African Football Association, the Premier Soccer League deemed that the fixture took place before the close of the PSL season.
"Unfortunately, another suitable date could not be agreed upon by all the parties. The City however remains committed to bringing world class football and entertainment to its shores. It will continue to work towards showcasing its status as a globally recognised and major events destination," confirmed a statement released by the City of Cape Town.
The news will come as a blow to Ajax, who are still embroiled in an intriguing relegation scrap, and travel to Pietermaritzburg to take on Maritzburg United in their penultimate league fixture of the season.
