More misery for Blitzbokke

Cape Town - The Springbok Sevens side's horror-show continued on Saturday after they lost to Australia in the Plate semi-finals of the Sevens World Series event in Wellington, New Zealand.

The Aussies were way too good for the Blitzbokke in a comprehensive 28-12 victory, outscoring the South Africans by four tries to two.

An early try by Cornal Hendricks gave South Africa a 5-0 lead, but when Philip Snyman missed the easy conversion the tide seemed to turn. Australia replied with quick tries by Lewis Holland and Shannon Walker (both converted by Holland) to take a 14-5 lead into the break.

They continued their dominance in the second period with Walker going over for his second and Ben Adams also dotting down. A try by Chris Dry was scant consolation for South Africa.

Australia will now play Scotland in the Plate final after the Scots thrashed Argentina 35-5.

Earlier on Saturday, South Africa lost 21-20 to Kenya in the Cup quarter-finals despite leading 15-7 at half-time. Coach Paul Treu's men outscored their opponents by four tries to three but poor goal-kicking from especially Snyman saw South Africa fail to convert any of the tries.

On Friday, the South Africans were equally miserable, losing to Samoa (19-10) and Canada (26-15) before sneaking into the Cup quarter-finals after beating Wales 21-0.
