They wanted a home with a view where they could sit for hours gazing at the hills in the distance and marvel at the glorious carpet of flowers that emerges every spring. 

This is Vanrhynsdorp, a town in the West Coast District that becomes a tourist hub during flower season but is otherwise a peaceful place where very little happens. “Rush hour in Vanrhynsdorp is when there are five cars,” Maria Lakay jokes. But it’s just what she and her husband, Rodney, wanted.

The house, with its spacious balconies and airy rooms, is their dream home – and they designed it all themselves. “We made sketches of how we wanted the house,” Rodney says. “We wanted to see the view.”
