Shandu: I shuffle my routine to stay motivated during lockdown

Maritzburg United midfielder Bandile Shandu says the key for him to staying fit and motivated during the lockdown is to switch up his routine.

The Team of Choice's longest serving player, at the relatively young age of 25, admits it isn't easy to go from training with your teammates season after season to suddenly find yourself working at home.

But Shandu, who is with his family, is making the most of his time, while maintaining contact with Maritzburg for team sessions.

Speaking to the club's official website, he said: "It is really hard but I think the key is to try and find a routine and switch it up a bit - sometimes I train in the morning, sometimes afternoon, I shuffle my routine because sitting and doing nothing is really tiring."

"We (teammates and coaching staff) connect almost every day. I also connect with Burger [van der Merwe, fitness coach], he sent us a program and also guides us how to do it.

"I'm always in contact with Phumlani Ntshangase and Kwanda Mngonyama, we normally call each other."

Maritzburg entered the enforced break as a result of the lockdown in an impressive fifth place, with Shandu pointing to the 2-1 win against Golden Arrows as the club's best game this season.

He said: "I think it where we came back against Golden Arrows - that one stands out in terms of fighting spirit. The guys showed so much character, fighting spirit and we kept on pushing."
