Cape Town - Relegated Platinum Stars ended their woeful season on a positive note as they defeated a flat Bidvest Wits 1-0 in Saturday's Premiership clash at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
It was not the greatest spectacle in terms of a football match though the hosts did go in front through Bonginkosi Ntuli inside the first 20 minutes.
Lehlohonolo Majoro missed a good chance to level matters though he headed over the bar. Substitute Gabadinho Mhango then fired wide inside the last 15 minutes.
The opening 15 minutes lack intensity and any real notable action in the final third, as both sides looked cautious and uninspired. Yet, in the 18th minute the first goal was to arrive through striker Ntuli. From broken play, Dikwena did well to work the ball into a forward position and Ntuli gained possession, before hitting home a fine strike which flew beyond Darren Keet.
It was not a contest of free-flowing football although there was still a competitive edge in terms of the tackles flying in. Nonetheless, in the 39th minute Majoro had a great chance to level matters when he was picked out from a wide position by Vincent Pule.
Despite having just Dino Visser to beat from close range, the experienced striker sent his header over the crossbar. Pule was substituted just before the break with an injury and was replaced by veteran Elias Pelembe.
In the second half the majority of the play continued to lack quality and chances were at a premium. It wasn't until the 79th minute that Mhango managed to fashion an opportunity, though he sent his strike just wide of the upright.
Roger de Sa's men were able to see out the closing stages and it would end 1-0 to Dikwena, though their time as a PSL outfit officially came to an end as they were relegated to the National First Division.
