Cape Town City were in control of proceedings at Athlone Stadium on Sunday as they beat Bloemfontein Celtic 2-0 in an Absa Premiership clash.

The hosts showed real intensity early in the game and weren't afraid to put their bodies on the line, with Craig Martin getting stuck into the Celtic attackers with a few crunching tackles.

In the 27th minute City broke the deadlock thanks to Thabo Nodada's powerful shot from long range, which he fired home with aplomb to make it 1-0 to the men in blue.

City tried to press their advantage after taking the early lead as Martin burst into the Celtic box before going down, but his penalty appeal was waved away by the match official.

At the other end of the pitch Siwelele were pushing for an equaliser and Tebogo Potsane looked set to find the back of the net as he went through for one-on-one with goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh, but Martin recovered in time to make the crucial tackle.

Athlone Stadium were then treated to the second goal of the game on the stroke of half-time when Shane Roberts fed Surprise Ralani who kept his composure to provide the finish for a 2-0 lead.

After the interval City maintained their dominance and created another chance to score as Ralani crossed for an unmarked Roberts but he skied his shot.

As the second half wore on Celtic struggled to create goal-scoring opportunities while City controlled the pace of the game with spells of composed possession football.

City saw out the game comfortably in the end to claim all three points and move up to 10th position in the standings, while Celtic are one point above them in ninth.
