Typical of titans of industry, the duo of Johann Rupert and Patrice Motsepe have thrown down the gauntlet to the South African rugby establishment following their consortium's eye-catching offer to become the majority shareholders of the Boland Rugby Union (BRU).

Despite the union's relatively lowly status - the Cavaliers won the Currie Cup first division title last weekend, but can only battle for promotion in 2024 - South Africa's two most prominent businessmen, through a group consisting of the BRU, Motsepe and the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport (a Remgro subsidiary), said their newest investment will not become a feeding scheme to the Bulls.

In fact, they believe the Cavaliers can become a URC franchise in future.
