RECAP of Day 2:

20-year-old Matthew Sates missed out on a Olympic qualification despite clinching gold in the men's 200m butterfly at the SA Swimming Championships on Tuesday.

It was a disappointing evening for SA swimmers as no one could reach the Paris Olympic event qualifying times. However, para-swimmer Kat Swanepoel qualified for August's Paris Paralympics.

Swanepoel finished sixth in the women's 50m breaststroke S14-S15 multi-class but swam a Paralympic qualifying time of 55.04 in her category.

Paralympic star Christian Sadie also qualified for Paris in the S7 100m backstroke whose heat time of 1:15.14 proved to be his fastest of the day, while Nathan Hendricks, who swam 1:02.12 in the S13 100m backstroke final, also booked his ticket to the French capital.

Sates fell short of an Olympic qualifying time despite overwhelmingly winning the men's 200m butterfly final with a time of 1:56.99.

South Africa's most decorated Olympian Chad le Clos pulled out of his favoured 200m butterfly event, a race where he famously took gold from Michael Phelps at the 2012 London Games.

Le Clos was set to race in two events but withdrew from the 200m fly final after finishing second in the men's 100m freestyle final, which was won by World Championship medallist Pieter Coetzé.

Coetzé won his second gold of the SA Swimming Championships, adding from his 50m backstroke win on Monday and then touched the wall first in the 100m freestyle (49.12). Le Clos took silver in 49.32.
