With the Proteas only having three T20s against the West Indies scheduled before kicking off their 2024 T20 World Cup campaign in mid-year, it's unsurprising the ongoing SA20 is considered a vital platform for national coach Rob Walter to do selection scouting.

Following the ODI side's credible run to the semi-finals of the 50-over showpiece in India late last year, there was an undercurrent of opinion that South Africa should mix their established stars with short-termism in the form of enlisting men like Faf du Plessis and Rilee Rossouw as a recipe for achieving elusive success in an ICC tournament.

However, Walter has been pretty measured in that regard, never dismissing the claims of, for example, near 40-year-old Du Plessis but also prioritising the expansion of his depth pool.
