It cannot be that former Springbok Wynand Claassen and his unidentified companions would go to such lengths to block Newlands' sale just to preserve sentimental nostalgia. After the stadium was emphatically deemed not a heritage site, what else could be driving the career architect's stubborn actions? Sibusiso Mjikeliso asks.
When Wynand Claassen was first asked about the motives behind his application to render Newlands Rugby Stadium a heritage site, he was quick to point out that it was the place where the first Springbok of colour, Errol Tobias, first played Test rugby for South Africa (versus Ireland on 30 May 1981).
He also mentioned that it was where the Springboks' 1995 Rugby World Cup journey began, where they beat Australia en route to the historic nation-building feat.
