Pretoria - SuperSport United have signed striker Thabani Mthembu on a free transfer after trials at the club, it was announced on Wednesday.
The South African international, who has just turned 20-years-old, was on the books of Platinum Stars last season but did not have his contract renewed, according to the supersport.com website.
Mthembu was one of the scorers when Matsatsantsa beat rivals Mamelodi Sundowns in the final of the Gauteng Cup final on penalties last weekend and his performance in the tournament and other friendly matches did enough to convince coach Cavin Johnson of his worth.
Johnson also worked with Mthembu when he was at Platinum Stars, giving him his debut in the 2012/13 PSL season.
In two seasons at Stars, Mthembu featured in 19 games but did not score any league goals.
He was not in the match day squads when Stars won last year’s MTN8 and Telkom Knockout.
Pinetown-born Mthembu, who was on the books at the Kaizer Chiefs academy, was part of the Bafana Bafana squad at last year’s Cosafa Senior Challenge tournament in Zambia, winning two caps for the country.
