Cape Town City owner wants Leicester City partnership

Cape Town - Cape Town City FC owner John Comitis has confirmed that they have approached Leicester City regarding a possible partnership in the future.

Leicester surprised the world by clinching the Premier League title under the guidance of Claudio Ranieri last season and Comitis believes Cape Town City and The Foxes have similar traits.

When Comitis renamed Mpumalanga Black Aces and moved the club down to Cape Town, rumours were that the former Ajax Cape Town boss is looking to strike a deal with Manchester City.

The blue side of Manchester have already formed partnerships with New York City FC from the United States as well as Melbourne City in Australia.

“I didn’t make it a secret that at the back of my mind, there’s the possibility of looking at an opportunity like that,” said Comitis of the rumoured City link.

“I can tell you that we have made an approach to Leicester City, because we feel they have the same kind of aura. They’ve (Leicester) come as this new team from nowhere - a bunch of very committed players, in blue, and changed the face of the EPL, for years to come.

“So it’s not just Manchester City - if you know, Mpumalanga Black Aces already has a relationship with Manchester City, on a grassroots level, where they pay Man City to get staff to come in and run football clinics in the community in Mpumalanga.

"If you asking me if there’s an official relationship -no, there isn’t. If you asking me if you get a sense that everything is lining up itself, that it’s going in that direction - I’ll say to you, ‘Funnily enough it is’.”

Comitis again hints that Man City sponsors Etihad Airways are looking to “land” in Cape Town.

“It’s something I would pursue if I got a sniff that there is interest,” he continued.

“I can tell you: Eithad is trying to land in Cape Town … so you can call that co-incidence or synchronicity.”

Cape Town City will clash against Polokwane City on Tuesday, August 23 in their opening Absa Premiership encounter at Cape Town Stadium.

Kick-off is at 19:30.
