Carragher criticises Sturridge performance

Cape Town - Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said that striker Daniel Sturridge offers nothing to Jurgen Klopp's side after a disappointing 1-0 defeat in their EFL Cup semi-final at Anfield.

The Reds missed their chance to meet either Manchester United or Hull in the final at Wembley next month.

Their 2-0 aggregate loss to Southampton made Carragher critical in his assessment of his former team-mate, Sturridge.

Sturridge has featured sparingly under Klopp this season due to injuries and the form of Roberto Firmino in the lone striking role.

However, Carragher feels it's much more than just Firmino that has seen the England striker fall out of favour with the German manager.

"He's a completely different player now to what he was when he first came," the SkySports pundit said after the game.

"I don't know if his pace is completely gone or he's that worried with injuries.

"The only reason to have Sturridge on the team now is for his finishing ability but you've basically gotta put things on a plate for him. Now tonight Liverpool did, but he didn't finish.

"When he doesn't score, you're basically down to ten men really."

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
