Alderweireld fully focused on Spurs for now

Cape Town - Toby Alderweireld says he is happy at Tottenham once again and is focused on doing his best for the club.

The 29-year-old Belgian centre-back had to watch Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez build a solid centre-back pairing at Spurs last season.

The former Ajax and Atletico Madrid defender had been one of the club's standout players in previous campaigns, leading to reports of a potential move to Manchester United for this season.

But having remained, and along with a return to the side and the birth of his first child, the former Ajax and Atletico Madrid defender revealed he is "10 out of 10" happy at Spurs.

Speaking while on national team duty, Alderweireld told Sky Sports: "I'm the old Toby again. I try to do my best and help the team.

"How happy am I on a scale of one to 10? When you have a daughter it's 10 out of 10. It doesn't matter what happens. The joy that I get from that, I try to give it to my football.

"I'm focused on Spurs and trying to help the team. That's all I can do."

Alderweireld, who has made nine appearances for his club in 2018/19, is yet to agree on a new deal, with his current contract expiring at the end of the season.

He is likely to remain in the side though with Vertonghen out injured with a hamstring injury.

"He is devastated he can't play but will try to come back as quickly as possible. If you're injured it's always mentally hard. He will get through this and become stronger," added Alderweireld.
