CHIEFS 23-23 HURRICANES. The hooter sounds, and we have our first draw of Super Rugby 2019! The Chiefs have broken their losing streak but still not the result they were looking for. Promising signs still for the Chiefs before their tour to South Africa begins next week.

  • 82'

After 13 phases, the ball squirts out on the Chiefs side on halfway.

  • 80'

Hurricanes have a scrum on halfway in the last minute. At this point, the Chiefs will be happy just to escape the game without a loss!

  • 79'

Jordie Barrett makes an error which looks as if it is down to nerves. An attempted grubber comes off the top of his boot and into touch on the full, 40 metres from the Canes line.

  • 77'

The Chiefs manage to retain the ball from the back of a messy scrum. Damian McKenzie gets it right on the dead ball line and clears, but Beauden Barrett was offside, gifting the Chiefs a relieving penalty.

  • 76'

Marty McKenzie will let out a big sigh of relief! The Canes win the ball but can't get it over the line, with Liam Mitchell eventually knocking the ball on.

  • 75'

A terrible error from Marty McKenzie! He's standing deep in goal and drops the ball which he was about to clear. Canes have a 5 metre scrum.

  • 74'

Once again, Tiatia gets his hands on the ball, following a Chiefs clearance. It's true vu, with him grubbering into touch, just 15 metres from the Chiefs line.

  • 73'

Well-worked ball off the back of the scrum allows Tiatia to grubber it, all the way down to the Chiefs 22. Defensive lineout incoming.

  • 71'

The Chiefs have a lineout on halfway which they win, but the Hurricanes have forced a maul and turnover. The Canes will have a scrum on their own 40 metre line.

  • 67'

A fantastic run from Chase Tiatia! He spots a gap and accelerates into it with a sidestep. Carries it around 40 metres up field from the Canes 22.

  • 65'

A dominant scrum from the Chiefs earns them a penalty near the sideline, just outside the Canes 22. The shot at goal goes just wide.

  • 64'

Great work from Tyler Ardron turns the ball over! Nanai-Seturo, who has just come onto the field, gets it on the wing in space. He looks to grubber it past his opposing winger but cover defence comes in the form of Chase Tiatia. He throws a forward pass, however, and the Chiefs have a scrum on the Canes 22.

  • 62'

The players are out on their feet here, after a period of high octane rugby. The ball is carried a few times from each side before Anton Lienert-Brown knocks it on at the Chiefs 40 metre line.

  • 61'

The Canes get front foot ball in their own half from the lineout. It is shifted out wide in the backline, with Jordie Barrett shrugging off a tackle. It is carried into the 22 before a few loose passes result in the eventual turnover of the ball. Chiefs clear up field.

  • 58'

PENALTY. CHIEFS. D MCKENZIE. 23-23. Damian McKenzie has a shot from about 55 metres out. Incredibly, he's hit the perfect strike and slots it! We are level again! What a last quarter we have in store!

  • 56'

The Chiefs have doubled up on defence on the blindside, but this doesn't stop the Canes from going there again. Good work from the defence this time though, and Tiatia is taken into touch.

  • 54'

A knock on in the tackle by the Chiefs gives the Hurricanes a scrum on their own 40 metre line. They've gone blindside 3 times from a similar situation. Let's see of they try execute the same move that has brought them great success all match.

  • 53'

CONVERSION. HURRICANES. B BARRETT. 20-23. A very tough kick from the sideline is made to look easy as the ball flies through the uprights.

  • 51'

TRY. HURRICANES. GOOSEN. 20-21. Brilliant from Chase Tiatia! The youngster makes a hot-knife-through-butter break on halfway. He looks up and throws a ball out wide to Wes Goosen. Goosen has his ankles clipped on the way to the line but had enough momentum to slide over the line in the corner!

  • 50'

The game has completely opened up! This is quickly becoming a classic New Zealand derby. Some fantastic running and clever play allows the Chiefs to carry it into Canes territory. The Hurricanes hold out from a good attack and it's Damian McKenzie who has lost it in contact. Barrett clears well, finding touch inside the Chiefs half.

  • 48'

The first kicking battle ensues and Barrett will feel he's won it. The ball is cleared to the Chiefs 40 metre line. They try to take it quickly but they've thrown away the ball, and the Canes will have a lineout on halfway.

  • 46'

Hurricanes go blindside from a scrum inside Chiefs territory. Jordie Barrett does well to draw the defender and pass to Wes Goosen. He carries it into the 22 before being brought down. Beauden Barrett gets quick ball and looks for a cross kick, but this is a poor attempt and just gifts possession back to the Chiefs. The ball lands behind the goal line and is touched down for a 22 drop out.

  • 43'

PENALTY. HURRICANES. B BARRETT. 20-16. Three from three tonight. This, his longest attempt, sails over the posts.

  • 42'

Clever work from TJ Perenara. The Chiefs give a penalty away on halfway. He milks a few extra metres by catching the Chiefs napping and taking it quickly before they retreat 10 metres. The Canes will have a shot at goal from right in front, 40 metres out.

  • 41'

PENALTY. CHIEFS. D MCKENZIE. 20-13. An important kick is knocked over the black dot.

  • 41'

CHIEFS 20-13 HURRICANES. The Chiefs will be elated to take a 7 point lead into half-time. The Canes dominated territory in the first 30 minutes but couldn't cash in as often as they should have. The Chiefs found their feet in the last 10 minutes of the second half and will be tough to stop if they can continue this beautiful, quick, running rugby into the second half.

  • 41'

The second half is underway with a kick off from Beauden Barrett. The Chiefs field it about 30 metres out . The clearance is straight down the middle of the park and Beauden Barrett runs it back.

  • 40'

A dominant scrum from the Chiefs earns them another penalty. This time, they will have a shot at goal.

  • 37'

The Chiefs are really getting going here! They win a lineout on their 22 and with penalty advantage, the ball is handed to the backline. They charge upfield and get it all the way into the Canes 22. Under severe pressure, the Canes give away a penalty about 15 metres from their line which the Chiefs elect to scrum, instead of going for goal.

  • 35'

The Chiefs clear the kick into the Canes half but Barrett looks up and sees space. He executes a beautiful kick to push the Chiefs back into their half.

  • 34'

PENALTY. CHIEFS. D MCKENZIE. 17-13. The smiling assassin strikes it nicely and puts it through the posts.

  • 33'

Fifita is penalised for not rolling away about 35 metres out and centre field. Chiefs will have a shot at goal.

  • 31'

The Chiefs have a lineout 15 metres out from the Canes line but Ardie Savea somehow rips the turnover in the maul and the Canes clear.

  • 29'

That is superb from Beauden Barrett! The Chiefs game plan continues to succeed with quick ball. They shift it wide to Tumua Manu, who is in acres of space on the right touchline. He looks certain to score but as he dives for the line, Barrett appears from nowhere, tackling him into touch. He knocked the ball on in contact so the Canes have the option of a scrum, which they have taken.

  • 27'

PENALTY. HURRICANES. J BARRETT. 14-13. A wonderful kick from Jordie Barrett. He slots the penalty from 45 metres out and makes it a one-point ball game.

  • 26'

The ball shoots out the ruck near halfway. Weber dives on it and the Canes force an easy penalty on him.

  • 25'

The clearing kick is poor. Canes lineout 15 metres out. The Chiefs get away with it as they win the lineout and clear long upfield.

  • 23'

A good kick chase allows Coles to turn the ball over. Once again, however, the Canes get close before knocking it on.

  • 21'

CONVERSION. CHIEFS. D MCKENZIE. 14-10. DMac converts his own try.

  • 20'

TRY. CHIEFS. D MCKENZIE. 12-10. Brilliant from the Chiefs! Ardron breaks off the back of the scrum and gets it away to Weber. He chews off a few metres and throws a speculative offload to nobody around halfway. The ball eventually falls to Damian McKenzie who shows his pace in plenty of space. He beats a few defenders on the way to the line and the Chiefs regain the lead!

  • 19'

Kirifi knocks it on after a few Hurricanes phases. Chiefs scrum about 30 metres from their line.

  • 16'

CONVERSION. HURRICANES. B BARRETT. 7-10. Barrett extends the Canes lead with a simple kick in front of the posts.

  • 15'

TRY. HURRICANES. PROCTOR. 7-8. So tough to defend this and it shows. Quick ball from Barrett who hits Proctor with a short ball at the line. He makes the break and gets the try!

  • 13'

Poor discipline from the Chiefs! They've given a soft offside penalty away on the clearing kick. The Canes have an option to take the penalty on the 22 but instead choose to scrum from where the ball was kicked, 5 metres from the Chiefs line, centre field.

  • 12'

Disappointing result for the Canes. They set the maul up beautifully but knock it on while reaching for the line.

  • 11'

The Hurricanes go blindside from the scrum to Jordie Barrett, who drives a low kick into the Chiefs 22. He cops a late hit from Moeakiola who was trying to charge the kick. The ref has sent this upstairs to have a look and Mike Fraser sticks to his original decision. The penalty is from where the ball lands on the Chiefs 22. This time, the Hurricanes kick to the corner and will have a lineout 5 metres out.

  • 10'

A clear game plan has emerged from the Chiefs. They're playing the ball as quickly as possible and avoiding ruck time. A bit too quick for their capabilities this time results in a knock on, and a scrum to the Hurricanes just inside their half, near to the right sideline.

  • 9'

PENALTY. HURRICANES. B BARRETT. 7-3. Interesting to see the Hurricanes go for poles early on, showing plenty of respect for their opponents. Barrett does the easy work of knocking the ball over.

  • 8'

Good initial phase play from the Hurricanes. They get it to about 10 metres out before Retallick gives away a penalty.

  • 7'

The Chiefs make a mess of the ball inside their 22 after a couple of turnovers. They eventually clear for a Hurricanes lineout about 20 metres out.

  • 5'

Laumape breaks one on the 22 and then offloads out the back of his hand to Kirifi. He throws a one-hander inside as he's tackled into touch, which hits a Chiefs player and falls to Matt Proctor who dots it over. Unfortunately for the Hurricanes, Kirifi had a heel in touch. Play restarts with a defensive Chiefs lineout.

  • 3'

CONVERSION. CHIEFS. D MCKENZIE. 7-0. An easy conversion gives the Chiefs the start they needed.

  • 2'

TRY. CHIEFS. LIENERT-BROWN. 5-0. The Hurricanes turn the ball over inside their own territory. They try to run it and it falls to Chase Tiatia whose attempted dink is charged. Lienert-Brown regathers and sprints about 30 metres to get an easy try.

  • 1'

Damian McKenzie gets the game underway with a kick deep into the Hurricanes 22.

Some big changes to the Chiefs side today, following the drubbing at the hands of the Crusaders in Christchurch last week. Michael Allardice and Mitch Karpik come into the forward pack for Boshier and Seu, with Tyler Ardron shifting to 8th man. The vibrant young winger Etene Nanai-Seturo is only able to make the bench this week, with Ataata Moeakiola taking his place. The headline change takes place with Solomon Alaimalo missing out due to a head injury, meaning that Marty McKenzie comes in at flyhalf with Damian McKenzie moving to fullback, the position where much of his past success has come.

  • 0'

The Hurricanes have made 4 changes to their side, coming off a tight win against the Highlanders last week. There is a double change in the front row, with Toby Smith and Ben May coming in for Chris Eves and Jeff Toomaga-Allen. Reed Prinsep will start at blindside flank, replacing Liam Mitchell, meaning that Vaea Fifita moves to lock. Following a heavy workload in the first four weeks, big Ben Lam is rested and it's the promising Wes Goosen who takes his place.

  • 0'

Today's referee is Mike Fraser, assisted by Brendon Pickerill and Nick Hogan, with Shane McDermott on TMO duty.

  • 0'

The last time these two sides met was in the playoffs last year, where the Hurricanes prevailed in a tight game 32 - 31. It's worth noting that the Hurricanes haven't won in Waikato since 2015. Having lost their opening four games, the Chiefs will need to extend this streak if they're to have any chance of making the playoffs this season.

  • 0'

It's been hot, humid and cloudy for most of today, but the skies are clearing up and there is no threat of rain. Conditions are perfect for running rugby and we can expect plenty of it today from the quality players that these two sides possess.

  • 0'

Ngani Laumape plays his 50th game for the Hurricanes today.
