Craven Week in danger of being scrapped

Cape Town - South Africa's popular schools rugby tournament, the Craven Week, is in danger of being scrapped.

Rapport indicated on Sunday that SA Rugby's Youth Weeks may not take place next year if the governing body is unable to find a sponsor.

This would see an abandonment of the under-13 and under-18 Craven and Academy Weeks, as well as the under-16 Grant Khomo Week.

The Youth Weeks took place without a sponsor in 2019, but according to the Afrikaans publication, SA Rugby has no provision for hosting the events in its preliminary budget without sponsors.

Cola-Cola had sponsored the Craven Week since 1984 before ending its association in 2018.

The Craven Week, named after legendary former Springbok player and rugby boss, Danie Craven, has been held annually since 1964.

The 2019 edition was held at Grey College in Bloemfontein, with Western Province thumping the Blue Bulls 56-31 in the showpiece match.
