According to the county's website, Elgar has already played nine first-class, four one-day and one T20 match in two stints at Surrey, scoring 797 runs.

His 387 Championship runs in 2018 were an important part of the club securing their first title in sixteen years.

In the international arena, Elgar is one of the world's most respected Test batsmen. He has played 53 Tests to date, averaging 40.96, having hit 3 359 runs including eleven centuries.

Elgar will join up with the side in late April, in time for the second half of Surrey's campaign in the fifty over One Day Cup and stay for the remainder of the summer, making him available for thirteen of Surrey's fourteen games in the County Championship.

His contract is subject to any South African international commitments that may arise.

"I'm very pleased to have re-signed Dean as our overseas player for the 2019 season. To have a top quality player, who knows our set up was important and we look forward to him showing off his skills this summer," said Surrey CCC Director of Cricket, Alec Stewart.
