Overstrand fires nearly derail Kallis wedding

Cape Town - The devastating wildfires in the Overstrand region nearly derailed former Proteas cricketer Jacques Kallis’ wedding on Saturday.

Kallis, 43, married Charlene Engels at the Bona Dea Estate in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley near Hermanus on Saturday.

However, according to Netwerk24, the wedding was almost called off as the venue was damaged by the raging fires on Friday.

"The venue where the wedding is held was not damaged. Some of the gardens and another building was damaged by the fire but the wedding will go ahead," Rina de Wet, manager of Bona Dea Estate, said.

In Betty's Bay, 31 houses were completely destroyed and 28 partially damaged by wildfires.

More than 12 800 hectares of vegetation is also estimated to have been destroyed as a result of the blaze.

According to the Joint Operations Centre for the wildfires, there had been 94km/h wind gusts and wind speeds of 60km/h across the Overstrand on Friday evening.

By Saturday the wind had subsided and Engels shared a post on her Instagram account that the wedding would go ahead.
