Commentary
  • South Africa win - So South Africa have won the second Test by an innings and 92 runs, and the series has finished 1-1. Graeme Smith is the Man of the Match for his monumental innings, and AB de Villiers is the Man of the Series.

  • Over 135.1 Pak 326 all out - WICKET! Asad Shafiq st de Villiers b Duminy 130 (320). At last Shafiq makes the mistake, dancing down the track to Duminy and this time de Villiers makes no mistake with the stumping. Zulfiqar Babar will not bat, and that is the end of the Test. Steyn 1/48, Philander 1/34, Tahir 3/98, Duminy 3/67 (his best in Tests), Elgar 1/3.

  • Over 135 Pak 326/8 (Shafiq 130, Junaid 2) - Junaid misses a huge swing against Tahir, but it misses the stumps as well. The resistance continues.

  • Over 134 Pak 326/8 (Shafiq 130, Junaid 2) - Duminy continues and gets Junaid driving off the thick edge. Shafiq dances down the track but does not get enough bat on it to reach the boundary.

  • Over 133 Pak 323/8 (Shafiq 129, Junaid 0) - Shafiq tried to get Tahir away, and did hit one to the cover sweeper early in the over, but can't retain the strike.

  • Over 132 Pak 323/8 (Shafiq 129, Junaid 0) - WICKET! Mohammad Irfan b Duminy 14 (29). For the second time in the innings, Duminy strikes with the first ball of a spell. Irfan played down the wrong line. Duminy is getting some sharp turn, but must pitch it a bit shorter to do so.

  • Over 131 Pak 323/7 (Shafiq 129, Irfan 14) - It is that time as Shafiq turns down easy singles to protect his partner. He almost gives it away as Steyn drops one short and he is beaten on the hook. He chases a wide delivery, but an appeal for a catch be de Villiers is turned down. He connects with a pull off the last ball, but might have preferred a single to the boundary that results.

  • Over 130 Pak 319/7 (Shafiq 125, Irfan 14) - Irfan doesn't mind Tahir's googly, swatting him twice through mid wicket. He is beaten by the leg spinner, but does have a new highest Test score to his name.

  • Over 130 Pak 319/7 (Safiq 125, Irfan 14) - Irfan doesn't mind Tahir's googly, swatting him twice through mid wicket. He is beaten by the leg spinner, but does have a new highest Test score to his name.

  • Over 129 Pak 311/7 (Shafiq 125, Irfan 6) - Steyn does find the edge of Irfan's bat but it scuttles past the slips for a four. He proceeds to edge the next into the ground and gets off strike with a neat push to the off side. Drinks will be taken.

  • Over 128 Pak 306/7 (Shafiq 125, Irfan 1) - Imran Tahir gets one to kick out of the rough, but the googly was heading down leg side and the only result is a couple of byes.

  • Over 127 Pak 304/7 (Shafiq 125, Irfan 1) - Steyn is back. Irfan sees off the over, but Steyn wants a REVIEW on the last ball. Smith waits a while before acceding, but the replay shows the ball was going way down leg side. Shafiq turned tdown the chance of an easy leg bye in order to keep the strike against Tahir.

  • Over 126 Pak 304/7 (Shafiq 125, Irfan 1) - Tahir concentrates on accuracy to Shafiq, but is edged by Irfan wide of slip.

  • Over 125 Pak 302/7 (Shafiq 124, Irfan 0) - Philander swings it past the outside edge of Irfan's bat a few times as the tall man gropes forward.

  • Over 124 Pak 301/7 (Shafiq 123, Irfan 0) - WICKET! Saeed Ajmal lbw b Imran Tahir 9 (28). Tahir does him with the slider. Ajmal played back and that hit him plumb in front, and he will not ask for the review this time. Tahir now has 3/88 to go with the five in the first innings. Irfan gets a thick inside edge into the pads as he goes for a big heave early on.

  • Over 123 Pak 301/6 (Shafiq 123, Ajmal 9) - Shafiq has not had much of the strike since tea, and has only added a single. He plays a few shots to Philander but can't beat the field. Eventually he gets a shorter ball and gratefully tugs it away to long leg, and then drives off the back foot to raise the 300.

  • Over 122 Pak 293/6 (Shafiq 115, Ajmal 9) - Imran Tahir has an lbw shout, but the googly was clipping leg stump and umpire Tucker's call of not out would have been upheld. He has another shout later as Ajmal pushes forward but again it is denied.

  • Over 121 Pak 293/6 (Shafiq 115, Ajmal 9) - Philander is back, and Ajmal continues to attempt to give the slips some catching practice. However, as the old pro would say, he's not good enough to nick it. Ajmal does make contact with an ungainly pull through mid wicket for a couple.

  • Over 120 Pak 290/6 (Shafiq 115, Ajmal 6) - Tahir bowls a tidy maiden over to Shafiq.

  • Over 119 Pak 290/6 (Shafiq 115, Ajmal 6) - A flurry of extras as Morkel oversteps - that hasn't happened as often as was his wont - and Ajmal gets one off the pads to fine leg. Apart from that, Morkel beat Ajmal at will outside off stump.

  • Over 118 Pak 283/6 (Shafiq 115, Ajmal 4) - Tahir gets some extra bounce to beat Shafiq on the cut.

  • Over 117 Pak 281/6 (Shafiq 114, Ajmal 3) - Whether Morkel bangs it in short, or pitches it up, Ajmal is going to have a go at it. He mistimes a pull and is beaten on the drive as the tall fast bowler smells a wicket.

  • Over 116 Pak 279/6 (Shafiq 114, Ajmal 1) - WICKET! Adnan Akmal lbw b Imran Tahir 5 (21). Adnan Akmal looks all at sea against Tahir, and is failing to pick up the googly. He ends up offering no shot and is adjudged to be in front. He takes it on REVIEW, but the replay shows it clipping the top of off stump so umpire Tucker's decision is upheld. Ajmal is in all sorts of trouble, surving an lbw shout first ball and then threading the next between short leg and leg slip off the inside edge.

  • Over 115 Pak 278/5 (Shafiq 114, Adnan 5) - A good over from Morkel, almost having Shafiq in trouble as he took on a short ball.

  • Over 114 Pak 278/5 (Shafiq 114, Adnan 5) - Imran Tahir continues after tea, and finds the outside edge of Adnan Akmal but it drops just short of Kallis at slip. There are two chances for the keeper to score, however.

  • Tea - TEA has been taken. It was another good session for Pakistan, reducing the deficit to 144 for the loss of just one wicket. Misbah-ul-Haq will be kicking himself for getting out to the part-time left-arm spin of Dean Elgar for 88, but Asad Shafiq continues to look solid on 114.

  • Over 113 Pak 274/5 (Shafiq 114, Adnan 1) - Morkel in with the last over before tea. He is getting some away movement, but the inducker surprises Shafiq and he is lucky short leg has been taken away.

  • Over 112 Pak 274/5 (Shafiq 114, Adnan 1) - Tahir reverts to the more attacking option of bowling over the wicket. Adnan Akmal is looking comfortable on the back foot, but almost gloves a catch to leg slip as he is drawn forward.

  • Over 111 Pak 274/5 (Shafiq 114, Adnan 1) - Smith thanks Elgar for the breakthrough, but calls Morne Morkel back into the attack. Shafiq reaches his highest Test score in fortunate fashion as a ball rears up on him and flies over the slips off the shoulder of the bat.

  • Over 110 Pak 270/5 (Shafiq 110, Adnan 1) - Adnan Akmal gets off the pair with an inside edge to the Tahir googly. He is looking to play some shots early in his innings.

  • Over 109 Pak 267/5 (Shafiq 108, Adnan 0) - WICKET! Misbah-ul-Haq c Kallis b Elgar 88 (218). Elgar goes around the wicket and gives the ball some flight, and tempts Misbah into the big drive. It flies off the outside edge straight into the safe hands of Kallis at slip to break a partnership of 197. Elgar has claimed his first Test wicket in the process.

  • Over 108 Pak 266/4 (Misbah 88, Shafiq 107) - Tahir bowls a more attacking line, forcing Misbah to play more. He nudges one off the pads, while Shafiq gets one away off the thick outside edge.

  • Over 107 Pak 264/4 (Misbah 87, Shafiq 106) - Elgar tries his hand as the seventh bowler, but a rank long hop is crashed to deep cover as he starts his spell.

  • Over 106 Pak 262/4 (Misbah 86, Shafiq 105) - Imran Tahir is back for a new spell. He is around the wicket, trying to drop it into the rough outside leg stump. The old fox Misbah will kick anything away that he doesn't need to play.

  • Over 105 Pak 262/4 (Misbah 86, Shafiq 105) - Steyn is still bending his back and drops a few short. He tries going around the wicket and Shafiq almost plays it to short leg.

  • Over 104 Pak 259/4 (Misbah 85, Shafiq 103) - Duminy to Shafiq as the crowd cheers their man on, and he drives a wide one through the covers for four. He's delighted as this is a valuable innings.

  • Over 103 Pak 255/4 (Misbah 85, Shafiq 99) - Steyn strays down the leg side first ball, and Misbah clips it away for one. Shafiq then works it through the leg side fielders for three, before Misbah adds a single to move to 85. Steyn sends a bouncer down and forces Shafiq to duck, before he takes a single off the ball to third man to move to 99.

  • Over 102 Pak 249/4 (Misbah 83, Shafiq 95) - Lots of turn for Duminy outside the off stump, but then he lobs up a full toss and Shafiq drives it to the cover ropes with disdain. He then double steps down the track and pushes the ball for two past point. Asad five away from his fourth Test ton.

  • Over 101 Pak 243/4 (Misbah 83, Shafiq 89) - Steyn is back and the first ball is driven off the back foot on the off side for one, after which Shafiq defends manfully. He then glances it off his pads for one, and then Misbah does the same but gets two to his name.

  • Over 100 Pak 239/4 (Misbah 80, Shafiq 88) - Oh goodness! Shafiq nearly chops the ball onto his stumps as Duminy cramps him for room. So close! The spinner keeps it tight for the whole over, and it's a maiden. It's drinks, and the batsmen have seen out three hot hours today.

  • Over 99 Pak 239/4 (Misbah 80, Shafiq 88) - AB's wonderful athleticism saving byes down the leg side as Kallis strays, before each batsman grabs a single. Both batsmen nearing their tons... Will this be a repeat of AB and Smith?

  • Over 98 Pak 237/4 (Misbah 79, Shafiq 87) - Duminy comes into the attack again as Smith tries to find a solution to this partnership. Misbah pulls a short and wide long hop for four though and then a full toss sees him run a single. The Proteas are getting a bit sloppy now, and Shafiq gets another boundary via a sexy cover drive.

  • Over 97 Pak 228/4 (Misbah 74, Shafiq 83) - Misbah gets a single off Kallis by pushing it past point off the back foot. Shafiq then gets four by flicking it off his pads, but it was up in the air and shouts of 'catch' followed. The ball stops in the thick outfield grass, preventing an easy four, but Peterson can't prevent the final run.

  • Over 96 Pak 223/4 (Misbah 73, Shafiq 79) - Tahir giving the ball some good flight, and dropping it into the rough consistently. Shafiq can't get him away and it's another run-free over.

  • Over 95 Pak 223/4 (Misbah 73, Shafiq 79) - Kallis continues and bangs in a short one, causing Misbah to duck under it. He then escapes with a dot ball despite sending down a full toss, as Misbah hits it straight back to the bowler. It's a maiden.

  • Over 94 Pak 223/4 (Misbah 73, Shafiq 79) - Short leg is a dangerous place to be today. Tahir drops it short again, and Shafiq smacks it right into Peterson. Shafiq follows that up by using his feet and lofting the ball over mid on for four. The lead has gone below 200 now, and the partnership has passed 150.

  • Over 93 Pak 219/4 (Misbah 73, Shafiq 75) - Veteran Jacques Kallis comes into the attack for the first time. Shafiq taps the ball to mid-wicket for a quick single, but otherwise the big man is on the money.

  • Over 92 Pak 218/4 (Misbah 73, Shafiq 74) - Just the one run off Tahir's over, to Shafiq as he cuts it to point and Steyn has to scramble to field.

  • Over 91 Pak 217/4 (Misbah 73, Shafiq 73) - Morkel induces an edge from Misbah, but the ball deflects into the tight pad. The skipper then flicks one off the pads for a single on the leg side. Morkel's going at 145kph, and Shafiq does well to bag a single off the last ball.

  • Over 90 Pak 215/4 (Misbah 72, Shafiq 72) - Tahir comes into the attack, giving Philander a break from the heat.He varies his pace and flight, and ends up with a maiden. He's pitching it into the rough, making life uncertain for the batsmen.

  • Over 89 Pak 215/4 (Misbah 72, Shafiq 72) - Morkel continues and Asad gets off strike with a back foot push past point for one. Misbah the clips the ball off his heel for four to fine leg after Morkel strays down the leg side.

  • Over 88 Pak 210/4 (Misbah 68, Shafiq 71) - It's all pretty calm for Pakistan, despite this being a new ball. Misbah rocks back and guides the ball past the slips for a single. Shafiq sees out most of the over defensively, before nurdling a single off the last ball.

  • Over 87 Pak 208/4 (Misbah 67, Shafiq 70) - Morkel tries to get the ball a bit straighter and Misbah counteracts that by angling his bat to send the ball to third man for a single. He then goes a bit too straight to Shafiq, who clips it off his pads and they run two more.

  • Over 86 Pak 205/4 (Misbah 66, Shafiq 68) - Philander continues from the other end and it's a maiden. Shafiq holds his ground as Big Vern goes over 130kph repeatedly, and well in line with the stumps.

  • Over 85 Pak 205/4 (Misbah 66, Shafiq 68) - Morkel takes the ball after lunch, and there are a few subs on the field. Robbie P and Wayne Parnell are on. Can't see Elgar... Anyway, Shafiq gets a single to mid wicket. Misbah is then hit on the elbow by a shorter one, but says he's fine. He responds by whipping the ball off his hips to fine leg for four. He does the same thing next ball but only gets two.

  • Lunch: Lunch! - Pakistan will be delighted with the session, as they didn't lose a wicket and both batsmen advanced to half centuries. They still trail by 22 runs though, so the Proteas will still be confident of a win today.

  • Over 84 Pak 198/4 (Misbah 60, Shafiq 67) - Philander sends down a maiden to bring on the lunch break.

  • Over 83 Pak 198/4 (Misbah 60, Shafiq 67) - Steyn is really hurrying Shafiq, who hardly has the time to get the bat down. It's a maiden and one more over to go before lunch.

  • Over 82 Pak 198/4 (Misbah 60, Shafiq 67) - Misbah manages to get Philander away for a single off his pads, before Shafiq gets one of his own with a deflection to third man.

  • Over 81 Pak 196/4 (Misbah 59, Shafiq 66) - Steyn has the new cherry and gets some swing right away, beating Shafiq all ends up. It's a maiden, and not a fun one for the batsman.

  • Over 80 Pak 196/4 (Misbah 59, Shafiq 66) - Duminy also gets a bit wayward, and Shafiq again cuts away for four. Before that, Misbah gets off strike with a single. Duminy also gets some steep bounce, and Shafiq has to sheild it away from his face for a single. The new ball is available and they take it.

  • Over 79 Pak 190/4 (Misbah 58, Shafiq 61) - Wow, lots of extra bounce for Tahir, forcing the batsman back. After some warnings from the umpire to keep things calm, though it's hard to see why, play continues and Shafiq cuts the final ball, short and wide, to the ropes for a rare boundary.

  • Over 78 Pak 185/4 (Misbah 57, Shafiq 57) - Misbah actually having a tough time against Duminy, who rips it past the edge by millimetres. Misbah then steps forward and sweeps to square leg for a single, and Shafiq sees out the over. Fast bowlers are warming up.

  • Over 77 Pak 184/4 (Misbah 56, Shafiq 57) - Tahir now aiming for the leg side rough, and Misbah gets off strike with a single. Shafiq then has a fortunate moment, getting the outside edge, but it flies over the slips for two.

  • Over 76 Pak 181/4 (Misbah 55, Shafiq 55) - Misbah sweeps the first Duminy delivery round the corner for two, and then narrowly avoids being bowled. How that missed we'll never know. He then drives against the turn and the ball squirts away off the edge, but he gets a single.

  • Over 75 Pak 178/4 (Misbah 52, Shafiq 55) - Ouch! Tahir drops one short and wide, and Misbah smashes it straight into short leg Dean Elgar's back. He was turning to get out the way, and it knocked the wind out of him. He's ok though, and stays close to the bat under the helmet. Misbah gets a single off the next ball, to midwicket.

  • Over 74 Pak 177/4 (Misbah 51, Shafiq 55) - Shafiq comes down the track to Duminy and smashes him straight, for four. He follows that up with a missed sweep that goes for a leg bye, and then Misbah bags a single at the end of the over. This is the second-highest partnership of the match.

  • Over 73 Pak 171/4 (Misbah 50, Shafiq 51) - Tahir continues so it's two spinners on the go, presumably to get to the new ball quickly. Shafiq sweeps the fifth ball to square leg for a single.

  • Over 72 Pak 170/4 (Misbah 50, Shafiq 50) - JP Duminy is brought into the attack to try and break this stand, but while he sends down a maiden to Misbah, the Pakistanis stand firm.

  • Over 71 Pak 170/4 (Misbah 50, Shafiq 50) - Misbah joins his partner on a half century, and their partnership also reached triple figures. It's the only run off the Morkel over, but the skipper is yet again rescuing his side. No pressure!

  • Over 71 Pak 169/4 (Misbah 50, Shafiq 50) - Misbah joins his partner on a half century, and their partnership also reached triple figures. It's the only run off the Morkel over, but the skipper is yet again rescuing his side. No pressure!

  • Over 70 Pak 169/4 (Misbah 49, Shafiq 50) - After the break, Shafiq brings up his second half century in two games, with a two off Tahir to third man, guiding it off he face of the bat. Pakistan are not going down without a fight, but still trail by 249.

  • Over 69 Pak 167/4 (Misbah 49, Shafiq 48) - Morkel is bowling beautifully and Misbah has no clue, but is fortunate enough to avoid getting an edge. It's a maiden from the lanky paceman as drinks arrive.

  • Over 68 Pak 167/4 (Misbah 49, Shafiq 48) - Bosh! A six from Shafiq off Tahir shocks the crowd awake. It's a full toss and is sent high to deep mid wicket. The other run off the over comes from a Misbah single to square leg.

  • Over 67 Pak 160/4 (Misbah 48, Shafiq 42) - Misbah gets a single off the second ball but it's a lucky one, as Morkel squares him up and he gets an outside edge. It falls short of second slip though and they can scamper a single. Just the one run from it.

  • Over 66 Pak 159/4 (Misbah 47, Shafiq 42) - Tahir continues and gets some sharp turn out of the rough. Shafiq isn't taking risks though, and defends. The spinner then sends one down the leg side and AB is unable to catch it, so it goes for four byes.

  • Over 65 Pak 155/4 (Misbah 47, Shafiq 42) - Morkel is on for Steyn, and quickly has Shafiq shaking his head. The paceman beats his man for the first few deliveries, but Shafiq gets off strike on the fifth ball with a drive through cover. Misbah leaves the final ball alone.

  • Over 64 Pak 154/4 (Misbah 47, Shafiq 41) - The deadlock is broken with the introduction of spinner Imran Tahir. Shafiq cuts the ball past backward point for two. He then drives uppishly and is fortunate to miss the cover fielder, but gets two more. He adds another one with a block to point, before Misbah gets a pair too off the last ball. A comparatively expensive over.

  • Over 63 Pak 147/4 (Misbah 45, Shafiq 36) - Steyn has recovered after his earlier wayward deliveries, and is increasing his pace with each ball. It's another maiden as the Proteas search for those six wickets.

  • Over 62 Pak 147/4 (Misbah 45, Shafiq 36) - Lovely close fielding by the Proteas, who dive ans scramble to prevent the singles and cause another maiden. Pakistan's batsmen are looking solid though, playing forward but unable to counteract the tight bowling.

  • Over 61 Pak 147/4 (Misbah 45, Shafiq 36) - Steyn continues to Misbah, and he's right on the money. It's a maiden. Meanwhile, news has arrived that the fifth ODI between India and Australia has been called off due to rain.

  • Over 60 Pak 147/4 (Misbah 45, Shafiq 36) - Review! Shafiq is given out LBW to Philander but sends it upstairs. Turns out the ball would have missed leg stump, so Rod Tucker's decision is overturned. Aside from that, it's a maiden as Philander keeps the ball right on line.

  • Over 59 Pak 147/4 (Misbah 45, Shafiq 36) - Steyn is not having a fun time so far, sending the first delivery well down the leg side and requiring De Villiers to dive in vain. It goes for four byes. Misbah flicks the next one off his pads for two, before Steyn recovers his line and keeps things tidy for the rest of the over.

  • Over 58 Pak 141/4 (Misbah 43, Shafiq 36) - Maiden over from Philander, as Shafiq plays each ball on its merits. Big Vern has been more controlled than Steyn so far this morning.

  • Over 57 Pak 141/4 (Misbah 43, Shafiq 36) - Steyn takes the ball from the other end, and Shafiq punishes the first ball, which is too full, by flicking it leg side for four. He then drives the third ball through mid-off four three. Meanwhile Du Plessis has been fined 50% of his match fee for scuffing up the ball.

  • Over 56 Pak 134/4 (Misbah 43, Shafiq 29) - The players are on the field, with Misbah and Asad Shafiq continuing. The skipper gets the first run of the day off Philander, driving square off the back foot for a single. Shafiq then lets the ball pass for the next four deliveries, before clipping one off his pads for another single.

  • Greetings! - Hello and welcome to day four of the second Test in Dubai, where the Proteas need six wickets to win the match, including that of Misbah, who is not out on 42. Pakistan trail by 286 runs, after bowling the visitors out for 517 yesterday.

  • Stumps Day Three - It is stumps on day three and Pakistan are 132 for 4 after 55 overs. There is a good partnership developing between Misbah and Shafiq but South Africa are still in control with two days to go. Pakistan are 286 runs behind and South Africa are 6 wickets away from winning this test.

  • Over 55 Pak 132/4 (Misbah 42, Shafiq 28) - Tahir tosses it up and MIsbah blocks. A shout for caught behind, Misbah smiles, he thinks he has not hit it. Smith reviews it, but replays show that it hit Misbah's arm and went up in the air. The third umpire says it is not out, South Africa lose a review. A single to Misbah as he pushes it into the leg side. Another call for a catch, the umpire gives it not out, Smith decides against the review. End of another over, Pakistan 132 for 4.

  • Over 48 SA 126/3 Smith 66 (137) Steyn 2 (15) - Smith is watchful as the day draws to a close, but does work a single from the last ball.

  • Over 47 SA 125/3 Smith 65 (131) Steyn 2 (15) - Steyn is beaten by Ajmal's doosra on the first ball, and thereafter resolves to stay on the backfoot. it is hardly elegant, but he defends solidly. He misses out on a seam up delivery that drifts down the leg side.

  • Over 45 SA 123/3 Smith 64 (127) Steyn 1 (7) - Steyn staying back to play Ajmal, and is hit on the pad. Fortunately for him it was outside the line. /Line>

  • Over 44 SA 122/3 Smith 63 (126) Steyn 1 (2) - South Africa are hanging in grimly towards the end of the day as Smith edges Zulfiqar to slip, but it was just short of the fielder. Smith ends the over be dispatching a full toss to deep mid wicket, where a fielder is in place.

  • Over 43 SA 121/3 Smith 62 (120) Steyn 1 (2) - WICKET! Kallis lbw b Saeed Ajmal 7 (30). Ajmal slides one through Kallis's defences and umpire Tucker says that is out. Kallis discusses it briefly with his captain and then walks off. It would have hit leg stump. The great man has failed again. Steyn comes in again as night watchman and gets off the mark with a thick outside edge.

  • Over 42 SA 118/2 Smith 60 (117) Kallis 7 (29) - Zulfiqar back into the attack and has a tidy over. No first over wicket in this spell, however.

  • Over 41 SA 117/2 Smith 59 (113) Kallis 7 (27) - Kallis plays out an Ajmal maiden. They will not want to lose another wicket tonight.

  • Over 40 SA 1117/2 Smith 59 (113) Kallis 7 (21) - The floodlights are coming on as the game heads into the extra half hour with 11 overs still to be bowled. Smith is playing with the straightest of bats.

  • Over 39 SA 111/2 Smith 54 (109) Kallis 6 (19) - Ajmal tries the doosra on Kallis and is rewarded with a thick edge, but Kallis scores 2. There is an appeal for lbw next ball, but there was a big inside edge there.

  • Over 38 SA 107/2 Smith 54 (109) Kallis 2 (13) - Junaid Khan goes around the wicket to Kallis, and is putting the ball on the spot. Kallis resists the temptation to take on the bouncer. Zulfiqar Babar is back on the field with a heavily strapped right hand, but that should not prevent him from bowling.

  • Over 37 SA 106/2 Smith 54 (108) Kallis 1 (8) - A well timed straight drive gives Smith his FIFTY and takes South Africa past the 100 mark. He also takes his team in the lead. He follows that with another neat off drive for the second boundary of the over.

  • Over 36 SA 98/2 Smith 46 (102) Kallis 1 (8) - Again Smith has to hurry through to complete the second run as Adnan Akmal whips off the bails. Junaid Khan is keeping it tight.

  • Over 34 SA 92/2 Smith 41 (94) Kallis 0 (4) - Can Pakistan hope to get Kallis out cheaply again? He defends solidly from the start.

  • Over 33 SA 91/2 Smith 40 (92) Kallis 0 (0) - WICKET! Elgar c Azhar Ali b Saeed Ajmal 23 (70). Ajmal strikes in the first over after drinks as Elgar plays firmly but straight into the hands of the man at short leg.

  • Over 32 SA 91/1 Smith 40 (92) Elgar 23 (64) - Smith has a close call on the run out as he plays it to deep mid wicket. It was one of those replays where the TV umpire could not see exactly where the bails were dislodged, so not out is the call. Apart from that Azhar continues to be milked by both batsmen with the 50 partnership being completed. And talking about milk, it is time for drinks.

  • Over 31 SA 83/1 Smith 36 (89) Elgar 19 (61) - The Irfan full toss almost catches Elgar by surprise. Perhaps the batsmen struggle to follow the ball from the lofty heights where he releases it.

  • Over 30 SA 80/1 Smith 33 (86) Elgar 19 (58) - Pakistan's attack is looking a bit thin, especially with Zulfiqar injured. Azhar Ali gets the nod from his captain, but concedes runs off every ball in this over.

  • Over 29 SA 73/1 Smith 30 (83) Elgar 15 (55) - Patience is the name of the game as South Africa stalk that Pakistan score of 99. Just one scoring shot in that over as Smith picked off an Irfan leg stump delivery.

  • Over 28 SA 72/1 Smith 29 (80) Elgar 15 (52) - Smith is happy to wait for Ajmal to drift onto leg stump. He will pick those off all day.

  • Over 28 SA 72/1 Smith 27 (80) Elgar 15 (52) - Smith is happy to wait for Ajmal to drift onto leg stump. He will pick those off all day.

  • Over 27 SA 69/1 Smith 26 (75) Elgar 15 (51) - The runs are coming slowly, and now Asad Shafiq dives to his right to prevent a Smith boundary. Irfan continues to plug away outside off stump. He needs to watch where his feet are landing as umpire Tucker has another look at the danger area.

  • Over 26 SA 68/1 Smith 25 (71) Elgar 15 (49) - Zulfiqar fields s solid straight drive and has split the webbing on his right hand in the process. Saeed Ajmal will complete the over. Smith takes a risky run as he gets a thick edge on the drive.

  • Over 25 SA 67/1 Smith 24 (66) Elgar 15 (48) - Mohammad Irfan back in the attack, and he bowls a consistent line outside off. Tlg

  • Over 24 SA 66/1 Smith 23 (65) Elgar 15 (44) - Zulfiqar returns and South Africa will be happy just to see off his first over of a new spell.

  • Over 23 SA 64/1 Smith 22 (62) Elgar 14 (41) - Both batsmen are content to pick off the singles. Junaid fields off the last ball and looks to have a shy at Smith's stumps,

  • Over 25 SA 67/1 Smith 24 (66) Elgar 15 (38) - Mohammad Irfan back in the attack, and he bowls a consistent line outside off. Tlg

  • Over 24 SA 66/1 Smith 23 (65) Elgar 15 (34) - Zulfiqar returns and South Africa will be happy just to see off his first over of a new spell.

  • Over 24 SA 65/1 Smith 22 (66) Elgar 15 (33) - Zulfiqar returns and South Africa will be happy just to see off his first over of a new spell.

  • Over 23 SA 64/1 Smith 22 (62) Elgar 14 (31) - Both batsmen are content to pick off the singles. Junaid fields off the last ball and looks to have a shy at Smith's stumps,

  • Over 22 SA 62/1 Smith 21 (59) Elgar 13 (37) - Shadows covering half the ground as Ajmal continues to keep the batsmen quiet.

  • Over 21 SA 61/1 Smith 20 (56) Elgar 13 (34) - Junaid is not getting much movement, but is keeping it accurate. Elgar tries to pull a shorter ball but is hit on the thigh pad. There is some sign of misbehaviour as the last ball keeps a bit low.

  • Over 20 SA 61/1 Smith 20 (56) Elgar 13 (28) - Maiden for Ajmal, beating Smith with a quicker ball as he tried to cut.

  • Over 19 SA 61/1 Smith 20 (50) Elgar 13 (28) - Junaid struggles with his line, and twice is flicked to the on side boundary by Elgar, who is looking more and more settled.

  • Over 18 SA 53/1 Smith 20 (50) Elgar 5 (22) - Ajmal beats Smith, and that prompts the skipper to play some shots. Not the most convincing shots though, but a well timed on drive is helped over the boundary by Irfan.

  • Over 17 SA 45/1 Smith 12 (44) Elgar 5 (22) - Junaid is producing the odd unplayable ball, like the one that raps into Elgar's pad and inside edge.

  • Over 16 SA 45/1 Smith 12 (44) Elgar 5 (16) - Saeed Ajmal continues at the other end, and is getting some turn.

  • Over 16 SA 45/1 Smith 12 (45) Elgar 5 (16) - Saeed Ajmal continues at the other end, and is getting some turn.

  • Over 15 SA 42/1 Smith 12 (43) Elgar 2 (12) - Junaid gets things under way after tea and finds a thick inside edge of Elgar's bat. Smith is beaten and Junaid seems to be offering him some advice.

  • Over 14 SA 41/1 Smith 12 (37) Elgar 1 (11) - TEA. Smith just survives the last over before tea. Ajmal had an impassioned appeal for lbw, but does not have the option of a review. The replay shows that it might have clipped leg stump, and umpire Gould's call of not out would have stood anyway. His next call is for tea after another dramatic session which saw South Africa dismiss Pakistan for just 99, and they now trail by just 58 for the loss of Petersen's wicket.

  • Over 13 SA 39/1 Smith 11 (34) Elgar 0 (9) - Zulfiqar gets through a maiden to Elgar, and they will get in one more over.

  • Over 12 SA 39/1 Smith 11 (33) Elgar 0 (3) - Ajmal drifts down the leg side and is clipped away by Smith. Elgar cannot get bat to ball, but Adnan Akmal gives away a bye.

  • Over 11 SA 37/1 Smith 10 (29) Elgar 0 (1) - All spin now as Zulfiqar Babar joins the attack. WICKET! Petersen lbw b Zulfiqar Babar 26 (36). That one slides on to Petersen and hits him in front. Umpire Tucker raises the finger but it will be taken on REVIEW. No comfort for Petersen though, that hit him in line and was heading for the leg stump. Elgar is beaten by the first ball he faces.

  • Over 10 SA 37/0 Petersen 26 (31) Smith 10 (98) - Petersen prefers to play Ajmal off the back foot. He gets himself into a bit of trouble with a lofted shot over mid-wicket, but it lands safely.

  • Over 9 SA 36/0 Petersen 25 (26) Smith 10 (28) - Umpire Tucker issues an official warning to Irfan for following-through on the pitch. Smith reaches double figures with a straight push, but makes a hash of an attempted cut to a shorter ball.

  • Over 8 SA 34/0 Petersen 25 (26) Smith 8 (22) - Saeed Ajmal enters the attack earlier than expected. He produces an accurate first over, but the one ball on Smith's leg stump was tucked away for a single.

  • Over 7 SA 33/0 Petersen 25 (24) Smith 7 (18) - Irfan looks to keep Petersen on the back foot, but drops one too short and this time Petersen middles the pull. The next is short again, but outside off and cut away for another boundary, and another as he drives off the back foot. Thirteen in the over.

  • Over 6 SA 20/0 Petersen 13 (19) Smith 6 (17) - Petersen is much happier against Junaid Khan, producing some sweetly timed cover drives. The bouncer comes to end the over as Petersen is looking too ready to come onto the front foot.

  • Over 5 SA 10/0 Petersen 4 (14) Smith 5 (17) - Petersen ducks the bouncer, but the next ball is not as short and might have brushed the glove. Mr Tucker does not think so, but Pakistan have asked for another REVIEW. There is nothing on the replay to convince TV umpire Paul Reiffel either, and so Pakistan have lost both their reviews within the first 5 overs. It might have flicked the shirt. Petersen celebrates with a horribly mis-timed pull that drops short of Zulfiqar at mid on. Irfan's last over cuts Smith in half.

  • Over 4 SA 9/0 Petersen 3 (9) Smith 5 (16) - Petersen misses with an inelegant swipe against Junaid. He is already kicking up dust as he bowls, not a good sign for the batsmen. South Africa will only want to bat once on this pitch.

  • Over 3 SA 8/0 Petersen 2 (6) Smith 5 (13) - Smith strikes a confident boundary through mid wicket, but is hit on pads by the next. Rod Tucker says no but Pakistan take it on REVIEW. The replay shows the ball just clipping leg stump, so the decision is upheld and Pakistan are down to one review.

  • Over 2 SA 4/0 Petersen 2 (6) Smith 1 (6) - Smith looks settled against Junaid Khan, only once looking to work a ball to leg side. He gets off the mark with a risky single to extra cover.

  • Over 1 SA 3/0 Petersen 2 (6) Smith 0 (0) - Irfan starts proceedings with a wide outside off stump, but his next delivery is far too good for Petersen and beats him comprehensively. Umpire Tucker is already having words with Irfan about running in the danger zone. He overpitches and Petersen plays neatly through the covers.

  • Over 36.4 Pak 99 - ALL OUT! Junaid Khan b Steyn 4 (12). Zulfiqar Babar not out 25 (33). Steyn eventually gets it full and straight enough to hit middle stump, and Pakistan have been dismissed for just 99. Steyn 3/38, Morkel 1/12, but Imran Tahir will get the biggest hugs from his team-mates as he walks off with 5/32 to his name. After a reasonable start Pakistan have been demolished after winning the toss and batting first in this deciding Test.

  • Over 36 Pak 97/9 Zulfiqar 24 (31) Junaid 3 (10) - Zulfiqar ends the over with a cracking cover drive, but that means Junaid will have to face the music in the next over.

  • Over 35 Pak 91/9 Zulfiqar 19 (26) Junaid 2 (9) - Zulfiquar is going to hit at anything in his half. The leading edge carries over mid on, and he backs away but keeps out the yorker. Steyn does find the outside edge, but it drops short of the slips. Another top edge as he pulls just beats Elgar at mid on, but an elegant leg glance sees him keep the strike.

  • Over 34 Pak 84/9 Zulfiqar 10 (20) Junaid 2 (8) - More conventional play from Junaid Khan, but he has to survive two lbw shouts from Tahir. The firts was clearly down leg, but the second was closer.

  • Over 33 Pak 82/9 Zulfiqar 10 (20) Junaid 0 (2) - No point in the tail haning around. Zulfiqar swings lustily and gets an outside edge over the slips. The next ball finds the leading edge but carries safely beyond the man at mid off. A slow full toss misses the outside edge.

  • Over 32 Pak 76/9 Zulfiqar 6 (14) Junaid 0 (2) - WICKET! Asad Shafiq b Imran Tahir 10 (19). An old fashioned slog from Shafiq misses the ball which turns away just enough to beat the bat and clip the top of off stump. That is a career best performance for Tahir. WICKET! Mohammad Irfan b Imran Tahir 0 (2). The big man is more circumspect, leaving a googly which clips the top of the pad and goes on to the stumps to give Tahir his first five wicket haul in Tests.

  • Over 31 Pak 76/7 Shafiq 10 (18) Zulfiqar 6 (14) - Zulfiqar gets some bat - it looks like the handle - to a shorter ball down leg, and it is out of the reach of de Villiers.

  • Over 30 Pak 72/7 Shafiq 10 (18) Zulfiqar 2 (8) - Tahir is punished as he drops the first one short, but otherwise it is a tidy over as he continues to try different deliveries.

  • Over 30 72/7 Shafiq 10 (18) Zulfiqar 2 (8) - Tahir is punished as he drops the first one short, but otherwise it is a tidy over as he continues to try different deliveries.

  • Over 29 Pak 68/7 Shafiq 6 (12) Zulfiqar 2 (8) - Zulfiqar is hit on the pads by Steyn, but it was going down leg, and misses a lazy waft off the next one.

  • Over 28 Pak 67/7 Shafiq 5 (9) Zulfiqar 2 (5) - Time to get some breath back as Tahir for once bowls an uneventful over, dropping one or two a bit short.

  • Over 27 Pak 64/7 Shafiq 4 (8) Zulfiqar 0 (0) - Steyn continues and has an lbw shout first ball, but it was going down leg and the call of not out will not be challenged. Shafiq is battling, beaten outside off stump and then he does edge it but it along the ground between slips and gully for a rare boundary. WICKET! Saeed Ajmal run out (Petersen) 0 (2). Shafiq wants to keep the strike and calls his partner for a risky single only for Petersen to hit the target from cover with Ajmal still nowhere to be seen.

  • Over 27 Pak 64/7 Shafiq 4 (8) Babar 0 (0) - Steyn continues and has an lbw shout first ball, but it was going down leg and the call of not out will not be challenged.

  • Over 26 Pak 60/6 Shafiq 0 (2) Ajmal 0 (2) - Tahir completes the over with no further alarms. With 3/16 to his name, Tahir has his best Test analysis to date.

  • Lunch - LUNCH will be taken with South Africa in a dominating position. The first good news was the fitness of Dale Steyn, and he showed his value with a wicket from the second ball after Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat first. The top order never settled down, and the final quarter of an hour of this session might have settled the match already. Imran Tahir picked up three wickets and Steyn knocked over Younis Khan, and with only Asad Shafiq to bat with the tail after lunch the South Africans will be cock-a-hoop as they head off to the dining room.

  • Over 26 Pak 60/6 Shafiq 0 (2) - WICKET! Misbah-ul-Haq lbw b Imran Tahir 2 (7). Another googly from Tahir, and Misbah wants to work it to mid wicket but is hit plumb in front. He calls for the REVIEW, but the replay shows it was hitting leg stump and umpire Ian Gould's decision is confirmed. Pakistan have now lost both their reviews. But Tahir is not finished with his former countrymen just yet. WICKET! Adnan Akmal b Imran Tahir 0 (3). Tahir fires in a quicker ball, and Adnan backs away but it hits the pad and rebounds into the stumps. Tahir 3/17.

  • Over 25 Pak 60/4 Misbah 2 (6) Shafiq 0 (2) - Steyn beats the outside edge with a fine away-swinger, that after flicking his shoulder with a shorter ball. WICKET! Younis Khan c de Villiers b Steyn 10 (26). The next ball does find the outside edge and de Villiers does the rest. Steyn 2/14.

  • Over 24 Pak 60/3 Younis 10 (22) Misbah 2 (6) - Misbah almost done in the flight by Tahir as he drives lazily and the thick inside edge dribbles back to the bowler. Another inside edge gets him off the mark as he plays to long leg.

  • Over 23 Pak 58/3 Younis 10 (22) Misbah 0 (0) - Steyn continues to probe and has a little lbw shout from the first ball, but it is hardly convincing. Younis is happy to wait for anything heading down leg to work it away.

  • Over 22 Pak 52/3 Younis 6 (16) - WICKET! Shan Masood b Imran Tahir 21 (60). Tahir rather burgles a wicket as Masood drives, but it comes off the inside edge onto the pad and then onto the wicket. Tahir will not mind how it came about as he celebrates a wicket that has been a long time coming for him after his nightmare last Test in Adelaide.

  • Over 21 Pak 50/2 Masood 20 (56) Younis 5 (14) - Steyn returns and has a shout for lbw first ball, feeling that he has found the pad first before Younis gets the inside edge to it, but his captain, rightly it is proved, does not call for the review. There is some hint of reverse swing already as Younis leaves a ball that shaves the off stump.

  • Over 20 Pak 48/2 Masood 20 (56) Younis 3 (8) - Tahir starts the over well, but Masood latches onto a full toss to work ith through mid wicket. The top spinner drifts down leg and beats the keeper to produce four byes, in fact the first time that the ball has reached the boundary today. Younis gets a thick edge to long leg to end the over.

  • Over 19 Pak 40/2 Masood 17 (52) Younis 2 (6) - Morkel finds the edge as Younis Khan comes forward to drive, but it is all along the ground to Petersen in the slips. He gets off the mark as he drives to mid wicket, although that was a thick inside edge.

  • Over 18 Pak 38/2 Masood 17 (52) Younis 0 (0) - Better control from Tahir as he bowls a maiden, not giving Masood any room to free the arms.

  • Over 17 Pak 38/2 Masood 17 (46) - WICKET! Azhar Ali lbw b Morkel 19 (54); Morkel 1/10. Just as they were starting to look confident in pushing the singles, Morkel strikes. He finds the pads of Azhar and although it hits him above the roll, umpire Tucker feels that is out. Azhar calls for the REVIEW, but the replay shows it hitting the top outside half of leg stump and the decision will stand.

  • Over 16 Pak 36/1 Masood 16 (45) Azhar 18 (49) - Tahir is starting to pose some problems. Some hesitation before the batsmen decide not to take a run is followed by an outside edge from Masood.

  • Over 15 Pak 34/1 Masood 14 (39) Azhar 18 (49) - Morkel slips as he fires in the bouncer to Azhar Ali. The next ball finds the inside edge, but Azhar gets enough bat on it to get it down to fine leg.

  • Over 15 Pak 34/1 Masood 14 (39) Azhar 17 (49) - Morkel slips as he fires in the bouncer to Azhar Ali. The next ball finds the inside edge, but Azhar gets enough bat on it to get it down to fine leg.

  • Over 14 Pak 31/1 Masood 13 (36) Azhar 15 (46) - Tahir battles with his length and is put away for a few singles. Morkel scores a direct hit from a deep-set mid-on, but there is no appeal as Masood makes his ground comfortably.

  • Over 13 Pak 27/1 Masood 11 (33) Azhar 14 (43) - Azhar is starting to settle down, pushing elegantly off the back foot and then coming forward to drive Morkel to deep mid wicket. The outfield is slow as the umpires call for the first drinks break of this Test.

  • Over 12 Pak 22/1 Masood 11 (32) Azhar 9 (38) - Imran Tahir comes into the attack in the first hour, but starts with a long hop outside off. He does find a thick inside edge as Azhar pushes forward. Masood hits a full toss straight to a fielder.

  • Over 11 Pak 19/1 Masood 11 (29) Azhar 6 (35) - Morkel is the first change, going around the wicket to the left hander from the start. He gets more bounce, as one would expect from the tallest of the South African bowlers, but Masood does not have to play too many of them.

  • Over 10 Pak 19/1 Masood 11 (23) Azhar 6 (35) - Masood pushes another overpitched delivery down the ground, looking impressive when he plays straight.

  • Over 10 Pak 19/1 Masood11 (23) Azhar 6 (35) - Masood pushes another overpitched delivery down the ground, looking impressive when he plays straight.

  • Over 8 Pak 14/1 Masood 8 (21) Azhar 4 (25) - Azhar Ali looks for another risky single as Philander keeps bottling him up. He is sent back, but profits from an overthrow. Masood pushes a half volley past the bowler with more authority.

  • Team News - Pakistan will field an unchanged XI, while the Proteas have brought in Dean Elgar for Amla - and, somewhat surprisingly, leg-spinner Imran Tahir replaces all-rounder Robin Peterson.

  • The Ins And Outs - Pakistan won the series opener, comfortably, by seven wickets. South Africa, now, must do without batsman Hashim Amla, who has returned home for the birth of his second child. Fast bowler Dale Steyn is in doubt, too, after sustaining a hamstring injury. Jacques Kallis, meanwhile, has hurt his finger - but is fit to play.

  • Over 9 Pak 16/1 Masood 8 (21) Azhar 6 (31) - Steyn tests Azhar with the shorter ball, and he looks more comfortable on the back foot. A nice punch through the covers keeps the board ticking over.

  • Over 8 Pak 14/1 Masood 8 (21) Azhar 3 (25) - Azhar Ali looks for another risky single as Philander keeps bottling him up. He is sent back, but profits from an overthrow. Masood pushes a half volley past the bowler with more authority.

  • Over 7 Pak 9/1 Masood 5 (20) Azhar 2 (20) - Steyn wanted to keep working Azhar over, and is frustrated as he manages to push the first ball to mid on and scamper the single. Masood is leaving well.

  • Over 6 Pak 8/1 Masood 5 (15) Azhar 1 (19) - There was half an appeal from Philander as he found Azhar's pads, plumb in front, but even the bowler knew there was a big inside edge. De Villiers fumbles one down the leg side for a bye.

  • Over 5 Pak 7/1 Masood 5 (11) Azhar 1 (17) - Steyn mixes up his line and length, but a wide yorker is squeezed away by Masood for the first boundary. Du Plessis chased it all the way, but is adjudged to have touched the boundary with his left hand while pushing the ball away with his right.

  • Over 4 Pak 3/1 Masood 1 (5) Azhar 1 (17) - A tight maiden for Philander, forcing Azhar to play almost every ball.

  • Over 3 Pak 3/1 Masood 1 (5) Azhar 1 (11) - South Africa waste a REVIEW as Azhar fails to avoid a snorter from Steyn which deflects towards du Plessis at fourth slip. The replay shows it was nowhere near the glove, and Azhar calls for the physio to patch him up. Steyn strikes another painful blow in the mid-riff as Azhar seems all at sea against the ball swinging at pace.

  • Over 2 Pak 2/1 Masood 1 (5) Azhar 0 (5) - Philander is also swinging the new ball, but Masood manages to nudge one to fine leg to open Pakistan's account. Azhar hesitates as his partner calls for a quick leg bye but makes his ground safely.

  • Over 1 Pak 0/1 Masood 0 (0) Azhar 0 (4) - WICKET! Khurram Manzoor c de Villiers b Steyn 0 (2). Steyn beats the outside edge first ball, but no such luck with the second as Manzoor drives but edges to fourth slip where du Plessis takes the catch comfortably. Steyn 1-1-0-1.

  • Weather and pitch conditions - It is a typically clear day in Dubai. The pitch looks on the dry side, and the experts predict that it will start taking turn as early as late today even. Batting last could be a searching test.

  • Pakistan XI - Shan Masood, Khurram Manzoor, Azhar Ali, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq, Asad Shafiq, Adnan Akmal, Saeed Ajmal, Zulfiqar Babar, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Irfan.

  • South Africa XI - Graeme Smith, Alviro Petersen, Dean Elgar, Jacque Kallis, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Imran Tahir.

  • Team News - Pakistan will field and unchanged XI, while the Proteas have brought in Dean Elgar for Amla - and, somewhat surprisingly, leg-spinner Imran Tahir replaces all-rounder Robin Peterson.

  • Toss - Misbah-ul-Haq triumphs in the flip of the coin and Pakistan have opted to bat first.

  • Greetings - Hello and welcome to our over-by-over commentary on day one of the second and final Test between Pakistan and South Africa at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
