Anderson faces Italian test at Wimbledon

Cape Town - South Africa’s Kevin Anderson will face Italian journeyman Andreas Seppi in his second round match at Wimbledon on Wednesday.

The eighth-seeded Anderson cruised through his first round match on Monday, defeating unseeded qualifier Norbert Gombos from Slovakia 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

It was a dominant serving performance by the 2.03m-tall Anderson, who fired 20 aces and saved the only break point he faced in the match.

World No 50 Seppi, who defeated Australian qualifier John-Patrick Smith 6-2, 6-4, 6-1, will prove a sterner test, but Anderson will be confident of reaching the third round.

Anderson’s only prior meeting with Seppi incidentally came in the second round of Wimbledon last year, when the South African won in straight sets - 6-3, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3.

A win over Seppi would see Anderson face either 25th-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber or big-serving Gilles Muller from Luxembourg.

Muller knocked out world No 1 Rafael Nadal at last year’s Wimbledon.

Anderson's best effort at Wimbledon at date has been reaching the fourth round on three occasions - 2014, 2015 and 2017.

He'll be eager to reach the quarter-finals for the first time, where he could come up against defending champion Roger Federer.
