London - Roger Federer narrowly avoided an embarrassing first round exit at Wimbledon as the defending champion came from two sets down to defeat Colombia's Alejandro Falla 5-7 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7/1) 6-0 on Monday.

Federer was completely out of sorts for long periods against an opponent ranked 60th in the world and looked in severe danger of suffering his first defeat at Wimbledon outside the final since 2002.

But the top seed showed tremendous courage to overcome his struggles and grind out an ugly win that keeps him on course for a record-equalling seventh men's singles title at the All England Club.

What a match - what champions are made of.

Glimpses of cracks in the formidable grass form of Federer. If his opponent had been a ranked player of note, he would have been ousted in straight sets! Same for Djokovic. Federer's reign as the absolute wonder is almost over. He will struggle to claim the Wimbledon crown, and since this is his best surface, will also struggle to get any more grand slams. Having said that, great come back! Wonderful to see that he is still hungry enough to fight back like that. I hope this long match doesn't fatigue him when it counts. @ AJ - spot on!

Was probably nerves but Federer's a fighter. He will struggle to claim it once more but he remains one of the greatest players in history of tennis if not THE GREATEST.Let's see what he does in the next round.
