Weary Bertens claims Charleston crown

Los Angeles - Kiki Bertens shrugged off the after-effects of a gruelling semi-final to defeat Germany's Julia Goerges and claim the WTA Tour's Volvo Car Open title at Charleston on Sunday.

After heavy rain washed out play on Saturday, Bertens was left needing to play her semi-final against Madison Keys early Sunday before contesting the final a few hours later.

The Dutch 12th seed saved a match point against seventh seed Keys to win an epic semi-final 6-4, 6-7 (2/7), 7-6 (7/5).

She then returned to face Goerges, who also had to complete her semi-final on Sunday, and romped to a 6-2, 6-1 victory in just 58 minutes.

It marked the fifth WTA title of the 26-year-old's career. All of her five titles have come on clay.
