Charleston - Madison Keys lost her opening match to Laura Siegemund of Germany 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-4 Wednesday at the Volvo Car Open.

The American was a finalist at the Family Circle Cup last year.

The eighth-seeded Keys rallied from 5-3 down to win the opening set, but couldn't overcome Siegemund's steady barrage of drop shots and solid returns. Keys broke Siegemund's serve two straight times to lead 4-3 in the final set before dropping the final three games.

Keys fought off five match points in the final game, including her forehand that appeared long before the chair umpire overruled the call.

Keys took a hard tumble while sliding for a ball in the third set and had her left wrist wrapped by a trainer.
