Cape Town - Former world No 1 Simona Halep has helped swell the coffers of the bushfire relief fund following her efforts at the Australian Open.

The Romanian wanted to join ATP star Nick Kyrgios in donating money for every ace served during the tournament.

She, though, felt her serve was not strong enough, so instead pledged $200 for every time she gave her coach, Darren Cahill, a hard time during a match.

“Happy to announce that I have donated a total of $20 000 to the bushfire relief fund,” Halep revealed on her social media.

“I’ll be on my best behaviour from now on, promise Darren Cahill”

Halep also reflected on her Australian Open semi-final defeat, revealing what Cahill had said to her while analysing the loss.

“(Darren) told me that I played a good match, but I should pay more attention in the key moments of the match.

“I made mistakes on important points, and I should work on this in the future.”

Publicly, Cahill was much more supporting, tweeting after the match: “Bad luck to our girl, Simona Halep.

“We are all proud of you. You fight, you learn, you work, you come back stronger. This we will do. ”
