Cape Town - Victoria Azarenka has insisted that she will be back on the tennis court shortly after her pregnancy.
The former world No 1 cut her season short in July after announcing that she was pregnant, but she enjoyed a lot of success prior to that as she triumphed at the Brisbane International, BNP Paribas Open and Miami Open.
With her child expected to be born next month, Azarenka is confident that she will return in time to compete for most of the tournaments in the 2017 season.
“My pregnancy’s been a completely different experience from anything I’ve done before,” she told the Tennis Channel. “In theory, you know the process, but to actually go through that you truly start to deeply understand the magic of it. And it’s been quite a ride, I have to say.
“I don’t feel I’m missing out on something I won’t be able to do again. For me, it’s about getting to where I want to be and be back there again. That’s my ultimate goal.”
While the 27-year-old is eager to make her return as soon as possible, she made it clear that she will not rush back.
“I don’t try put any time frame for myself. I would love to make it as soon as possible, but giving myself a reasonable time to fully recover and be ready,” she said. “I’m not going to rush anything, and it’s hard to tell before the birth actually happens. So, we’ll see, but I’m positive that I can be playing tennis pretty soon.”
