The Johannesburg-born is the first South African to make the US Open final since 1965 when Cliff Drysdale made the the US National Championships (now known as the US Open).

Anderson was looking to become the first South African to win a Grand Slam singles event since Johan Kriek won the 1981 Australian Open.

However, the South African was outdone by the Spaniard in straight sets with Anderson delivering 40 unforced errors to Nadal's 11.
