Del Potro into US Open third round

New York - Juan Martin del Potro reached the US Open third round on Thursday for the first time since 2012 in his injury-ravaged career.

Del Potro, the 2009 champion but now ranked 142 after a series of wrist surgeries pushed him to the brink of retirement, defeated American 19th seed Steve Johnson 7-6 (7/5), 6-3, 6-2.

The 27-year-old Argentine will face either David Ferrer of Spain or Italy's Fabio Fognini for a spot in the last 16.
