Anderson survives scare

New York - South Africa's Kevin Anderson has advanced to the second round of the US Open after surviving a massive scare against Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas.

The South African No 1 won a five-set thriller 6-3, 6-7 (3/7), 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7/1).

The South African, seeded 18th at Flushing Meadows, was on the brink of going out after Cuevas served for the match at 5-4 in the final set, but broke back before forcing a tie-break, which he comfortably dominated with his big serve.

Anderson will next face Poland's Jerzy Janowicz in the second round on Friday after the Pole overcame Serbia's Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5.
