Serena needs foot surgery

Paris - World number one Serena Williams has been forced to withdraw from the WTA Tour events in Istanbul, Cincinnati, and Montreal after hurting her foot stepping on broken glass at a restaurant.

"I'm so upset I won't be able to play in the upcoming events because of this foot surgery. Thank you for all of your support. I can't wait to get back on the courts," Williams said in a statement.

Williams was cut on her right foot by the broken glass while at a restaurant. At the time, the extent of the injury was unknown.

Just two weeks ago, the 28-year-old cruised to a fourth women's singles title at Wimbledon with a crushing 6-3, 6-2 victory over Russia's Vera Zvonareva.

It was her 13th Grand Slam crown.
