Paris - World number one Serena Williams has been forced to withdraw from the WTA Tour events in Istanbul, Cincinnati, and Montreal after hurting her foot stepping on broken glass at a restaurant.

"I'm so upset I won't be able to play in the upcoming events because of this foot surgery. Thank you for all of your support. I can't wait to get back on the courts," Williams said in a statement.

Williams was cut on her right foot by the broken glass while at a restaurant. At the time, the extent of the injury was unknown.

Just two weeks ago, the 28-year-old cruised to a fourth women's singles title at Wimbledon with a crushing 6-3, 6-2 victory over Russia's Vera Zvonareva.

It was her 13th Grand Slam crown.

That is really bad news but hopefully everything goes well and able to play at the US Open. As far as the US Open, after several years of some controversy, hopefully the officials have stepped up to the plate and keep a better eye on what is actually going on in the individual matches. In some cases even the commentators have commented why the match was allowed to continue. Surely they have extra Line Judges and can do the change between games. I can only hope.
