Johannesburg - South African Davis Cup tennis star, Rik De Voest, survived a 7.6-magnitude earthquake which struck north-western Costa Rica on Wednesday.
De Voest and his wife Carolyn are on holiday in the Central American isthmus located country. Their villa in the province of Guanacaste was in the heart of the quakes epi-centre on the peninsula Papagayo.
"Our whole villa shook, things falling off the shelves. We rushed outside onto the golf course and waited it out, our hearts were pounding, but we are fine" De Voest posted on Twitter.
De Voest had decided to take a holiday break after the US Open before travelling to Montreal where he will do duty next weekend for South Africa in the all-important Davis Cup World Group playoff tie against Canada.
The Costa Rica earthquake caused landslides, collapsing bridges, and resulted in one death, officials said. Two moderate Costa Rica earthquake aftershocks have continued to rattle the country, centered near Nicova and Samara. But they were far lesser than the massive 7.6 quake earlier.
