Rio to host new tennis event

Rio de Janeiro - Rio the Janeiro will host a combined ATP and WTA event which will be the biggest tennis tournament in South America from next February.

Local organisers announced the Rio Open on Wednesday, to be played from February 15-23.

The event will be played at the Jockey Club, which features eight clay courts, including a 7 000-seat centre court.

The men's prize money will be $1.2m, and the women's $235 000.

The Rio Open will replace the combined ATP-WTA event in Memphis, Tennessee.

Brazil already hosts an ATP event in Sao Paulo, won by Rafael Nadal last month, and a WTA tournament in the southern city of Florianopolis.
