Federer battles past Simon

Paris - Switzerland's Roger Federer has beaten hometown favourite and 15th-seed Gilles Simon in five sets to reach the quarter-finals at the French Open at Roland Garros on Sunday.

It was Federer's 900th ATP Tour victory.

Federer, the second seed this tournament, won 6-1, 4-6, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Federer will play another Frenchman, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, in the next round for a spot in the semi-finals and he looks to win a record 18th Grand Slam title.
