WATCH: Tearful Andy Murray explains retirement decision

Cape Town - Three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray stunned the tennis world on Friday by announcing his plans to retire from tennis.

At a press conference ahead of next week's Australian Open, Murray broke down in front of journalists as he detailed his constant struggles with a hip injury.

He said he would love to end his career at Wimbledon this year, but added that the Australian Open could be his last ever tournament.

The emotional scenes that emerged from the press briefing saw the tennis community pay respect to a man who was one of the 'Big Four' in the sport alongside Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

South Africa's Kevin Anderson was one of the players to give his support to Murray, saying that tennis was a better sport with Murray fit and playing.

Australian Open TV published footage of the press conference to their YouTube channel, which you can view below.
